Back Tamil Nadu Telecom to sell metal cable unit Our Bureau
CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu Telecommunications Ltd will seek the approval of its shareholders to sell its metal cables making plant at Arakkonam. The unit suspended operations in December 2003 as the market for copper telecom cables collapsed with optical fibre cables and wireless technology gaining ground, according to officials associated with the company. The unit had a capacity to produce about 15 lakh conductor km of cables a year. With prices of copper cables collapsing, the unit suspended operations and about 125 workers in the plant opted for a voluntary retirement scheme, according to the sources. The Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation, a State Government undertaking; Telecommunications Consultants India Ltd, a Government of India undertaking; and Fujikura of Japan are the promoters of this company.
