Stirring moment

The sacrifice by communist prisoners in the Salem jail in 1950 (Feb. 13) is one of the most stirring events of Indian history. Prison officials opened fire on unarmed hapless prisoners in the Central Annexe Jail. A young communist, shouting slogans along with others demanding that they be treated as political prisoners, came in the direct line of firing. Immediately, several older comrades pushed him down and covered him. The youth, who survived because of the human shield, named his daughter Annexe out of gratitude.
