Woman gives birth to quadruplets

VIZIANAGARAM: R. Manju, 26, mother of a girl child of Neelakantapuram village in G.L. Puram mandal, gave birth to male quadruplets at a private nursing home in Parvathipuram on Wednesday. "It is a normal delivery. The woman and her four new-born sons are healthy," Y.V. Padmaja, who attended on the woman, said. Her husband R. Sunil runs a sweet shop in the village. - Correspondent

Panchayat secretaries seek repatriation

HYDERABAD: Members of the Andhra Pradesh Panchayat Secretaries' Federation on Wednesday made a strong plea to the Government seeking repatriation to their parent Revenue Department and re-designation as revenue secretaries.

At a press conference, federation president P. Vijaya Rama Rao demanded repatriation of an estimated 8,000 VAOs and some 3,600 assistant secretaries working in panchayats. - Staff Reporter

Help promised for

Urdu university

HYDERABAD: Sir John Daniel, President and CEO, Commonwealth of Learning, Canada, has promised to help the Maulana Azad National Urdu University (MANUU) to introduce e-learning and collaborate with other distance education universities.

Addressing the staff and students of the university, he called for ensuring quality in distance education, from designing the course material to monitoring the student's progress.

as gun goes off

GUNTUR: A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan M. Narahari, 27, was grievously injured when the Light Machine Gun he was holding fired accidentally in Veldurthi police station of Guntur district late on Tuesday night.

VIZIANAGARAM: The wedding of Boni Sarada, a 9th class student of Andhra Pradesh Social Welfare Residential School in Venugopalapuram, who gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday last, was performed with the man she loved and developed intimacy at Venugopalaswamy temple in Nellimarla on Tuesday. Student commits suicide

NALGONDA: A student of a private degree college at Kodad in Nalgonda district on Wednesday committed suicide on the college campus after being humiliated allegedly by a friend.

Tejawath Rambabu, 23, of Kothagudem thanda had gone to the third floor of the Sai Vikas Degree college after taking a written test and consumed poison. In a suicide note purportedly written by him, Rambabu said: "I never imagined that I would be humiliated by a friend like this." It was not clear whether the friend in question was a boy or girl. - Staff Reporter

WTO ruling decried

HYDERABAD: The Centre for Sustainable Agriculture, a civil society group, has criticised the recent ruling of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) panel upholding the complaints of the US and other countries on Europe's precautionary approach to Genetically Modified (GM) products. In a statement, G. V. Ramanjaneyulu, Executive Director of CSA, and Kavitha Kuruganti, researcher, said the WTO had undermined the sovereignty of nation-states in deciding upon appropriate environmental and food safety for their respective conditions. - Special Correspondent

Nellore: The district unit of Dalit Vidyarthi Sena has demanded a CID enquiry into the alleged bungling in the administration of hostel in the D.K. Government Womens' College, Nellore town. In a statement on Wednesday, its president A. Poorna Prakash alleged that students, particularly those belonging to weaker sections of society, were being harassed in the name of different categories of fees. Nellore: The hut of a destitute woman was allegedly burnt by rivals in Gudur town. The woman, identified as Vijayalakshmi, has alleged that the culprits, asking her to pay them their dues, barged into her house and set it on fire. Remand extended

ANANTAPUR: The judicial custody of eight suspects in the Tagarakunta Prabhakar murder case was extended till March 1 by the Additional Judicial First Class Magistrate's Court here on Wednesday. Only six of the eight suspects were produced before the court. Moddu Sreenu was not produced on health grounds.

Man ends life in

KHAMMAM: Dodda Appa Rao, 32, committed suicide by consuming poison in front of Chintakani village police station on Tuesday. He was married a few months ago to a girl with whom he was reportedly in love. The marriage was opposed by his first wife, who even challenged it in court.

The village elders supported his first wife and wanted him to hand over his properties to her. Protesting against their decision, he consumed poison and committed suicide near the police station. — Staff Reporter

Pirated CDs seized

BAPATLA: The anti-piracy wing of the police on Wednesday raided a few shops in the town and arrested three shopkeepers on the charge of circulating pirated CDs of some latest movies.

According to the police, they raided three shops and seized 35 pirated DVDs and CDs of latest movies and arrested the shopkeepers. The police produced them before the Magistrate.
