AIBA seeks CJI intervention

New Delhi: The All India Bar Association (AIBA) has expressed concern over filing of cases against a Madurai advocate for discharging his duties. It sought the interference of the Chief Justice of India, Y.K. Sabharwal, to ensure that lawyers and their families were not harassed for discharging their duties.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, the chairman and the vice-chairman of the AIBA, Adish C. Agarwala and S. Prabhakaran said the legal fraternity in the country were agitated over the action of the Inspector of Police, Anna Nagar, Madurai, in filing a case against V.C. Sankara Narayanan and two others.

It was curious to note that no action was taken by the Director General of Police against the Inspector, despite a direction by the Madras High Court to take action against him in a case of forgery. But Marimuthu registered a case against Mr. Sankara Narayanan. His friend Antony was arrested and one Ashok, cited as a witness, was also arrayed as an accused.

To restore confidence in the rule of law, the AIBA wanted the CJI to prevail on the State administration to take action against the delinquent officer. — Legal Correspondent

CPI's appeal to Government

CHENNAI: State council secretary of the Communist Party of India D. Pandian on Saturday urged the Government to regularise the service of 2394 teachers appointed for teaching computer science in higher secondary schools.

In a statement here, Mr. Pandian said though these teachers had served for five years on contract basis in government schools, they were not given uniform salary. During the last two years, the parents-teachers associations had appointed them.

Against this backdrop, any move to appoint teachers for computer education through new contracts was wrong, he said and added that the service of the already serving experienced teachers should be regularised. — Special Correspondent
