List of selected constables out

KADAPA : Kadapa Superintendent of Police Y. Nagi Reddy has released the list of 215 candidates selected for CRPF constable recruitment.

Those selected included six from general category, 89 OBCs, 38 SCs and 22 STs. They should appear for medical tests at CRPF Group Centre, Chandrayanagutta, Hyderabad, between February 27 and March 3, according to the SP. - Staff Reporter

Cycle rally flagged off

KADAPA: Cycling should be taken up as a sport by youth as it promotes physical fitness, Collector G. Asok Kumar said on Sunday. Speaking after flagging off a bicycle rally from Rajiv Marg to Vontimitta and back, he said youth excelling in sports such as cycling could gain employment in Army and Police Department. Ten cyclists of Cycling Academy, Hyderabad and students of Zion College of Physical Education were among the 200 participants.-Staff Reporter

Medical representatives elect new body

KADAPA: S. Shabbeer Basha was elected district president and Dinesh as secretary of Andhra Pradesh Medical and Sales Representatives Union here on Sunday. Others elected were -- V. prasad as vice-president, Santosh as deputy secretary and Narasimha as treasurer. V. Mohanakrishna was elected convenor of organised sector workers unit and D. Venkatasubbaiah as convenor of unorganised workers unit, union's State leader Venkat said. - Staff Reporter

Mass hunger strike

TIRUPATI: A contingent of Telugu enthusiasts representing the Tirupati chapter of the `Telugu Bhashodyama Samithi' would be participating in the State level mass hunger strike being organised from Monday at Hyderabad in pursuance of its campaign to get classical language status to Telugu.

The Samithi endorsed the decision of the State Samakhya to launch a State-wide campaign to achieve its 6-point charter of demands.-Special Correspondent

KURNOOL: CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu received party teams which covered 1,600 km on foot and visited 350 villages in the district here on Saturday. Dies in road accident

Nellore: One person was killed and 4 others injured following a head on collision between a lorry and a car on the national highway, near Naidupet on Sunday evening. The police shifted the injured to hospital and further investigation is on. -Staff Reporter

Civic Vice-Chairmen seek more powers

HYDERABAD: The Municipal Vice-Chairpersons have demanded that they be vested with some powers to serve people. At a meeting here on Sunday, they sought amendment to the Municipalities Act so as to empower them and threatened to stage a demonstration near the Assembly next month if their demand was not met. Association president G. Srinivasa Rao, was present. - Special Correspondent

Red sanders seized

TIRUPATI: The flying squad of the Forest Department has seized 105 logs of red sanders while being smuggled under the cover of paddy husk.

On being tipped off, the sleuths, led by Forest Range Officer G. Devaraju intercepted a lorry in the early hours of Sunday near Kotala ST Colony on the Rangampet-Ithepalle road. However, it sped past them.

The sleuths gave it a hot chase and the driver jumped out of the lorry and escaped. - Staff Reporter

Man done to death

Kakinada : Gudivada Sreenu, 24, who allegedly stabbed a person a few days ago, was done to death by his rivals on his return to Tuni on Saturday night.

According to the police, a group of five persons attacked him with deadly weapons in Isukalapet area and killed him on the spot. - Correspondent

Move to set up uranium project opposed

KADAPA : Political parties, civil liberties and voluntary organisations on Sunday demanded that Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy drop move to establish a uranium plant in Vemula mandal of Pulivendula constituency.

The plant to be set up by Uranium Corporation of India Ltd. and the State Government would not only degrade the environment but also have long-term effects on public health, speakers observed at a round table conference here.-Staff Reporter

Over 100 taken ill

Kakinada : Over 100 persons have taken ill after consuming a sweet made up of milk served in lunch arranged in connection with the marriage of a local public prosecutor's daughter here on Sunday. While 60 of them were admitted to the Government General Hospital, others are receiving treatment in different private nursing homes.

The condition of four persons, including two women, is stated to be serious.

Colourful start to temple ritual

TIRUPATI: Brahmotsavam at the shrine of Kapileswara in Kapila Theertham began on a colourful note on Sunday with `dhwajarohanam', the traditional hoisting of the temple flag atop the flagpost.

Amid beating of the traditional percussion instruments and the chanting of hymns from the scriptures, the chief priest hoisted the flag with an image of `Nandi' atop the `dhwajasthambham.'

Tirumala Tirupati Devastanams Executive Officer A.P.V.N. Sarma and Joint Executive Officer N. Muktheswara Rao took part in the `homam' that followed the event. - Staff Reporter

Diarrhoea breaks out in Nizamabad

NIZAMABAD : About 80 persons belonging to different colonies in Banswada town and Someswar, Kistapur and Ankole villages were admitted to the Area Hospital and some private hospitals of the town with complaints of diarrhoea and vomiting.

A majority of them are from Teachers Colony, NGOs Colony, Daily Market area and Misri Galli in the town.

According to reports, cholera broke out in Banswada and peripheral villages due to drinking water contamination with the leakage of water supply pipes. However, the situation is under control and all patients are out of danger.

MLA Bajireddy Govardhan on Sunday visited the hospital to enquire about the condition of patients. - Staff Reporter
