Student ends life

KURNOOL: A senior Inter student committed suicide by consuming poison at Alamur village in Panyam mandal of Kurnool district on Tuesday. The student, Ramanamma, was a student of Government Junior college at Nandyal. — Staff Reporter

Handloom exhibition

KURNOOL: Handloom and Textile Department will organise an exhibition-cum-sales show at Venkatachalapathi Kalyana Mantapam here between February 22 and March 3. Local body elections

CHITTOOR: Elections for local bodies would be conducted before the expiry of the term of members of Zilla Parishad Territorial and Mandal Parishad Territorial constituencies and gram panchayat, said A.V.S.Reddy, State Election Commissioner. He said that the term of the ZPTC, MPTC members and sarpanches of gram panchayats would expire on July 20 and 21 and August 14 and 15 respectively and elections would be conducted before that so that the newly-elected can assume office on those days. — Correspondent

Injured in clash

Nellore: Several persons were injured in a clash that took place in Lakshminarayanapuram area of Kovur mandal, on Tuesday. Trouble erupted following a tussle over some financial matters.

Policerounded up seven persons in connection with various offences, which include assault and hurling of stones. — Staff Reporter

Tape recorders distributed

Nellore: Under the auspices of State Handicapped Co-operative Finance Corporation, tape recorders were distributed to five visually challenged students here on Tuesday. The Joint Collector, B. Motorcycle rally

KADAPA: Kadapa Zilla Parishad Chairman K. Suresh Babu, Mayor P. Ravindranath Reddy and DCC President A. Amarnath Reddy led a motorcycle rally by about 200 Youth Congress functionaries under `Prerana' programme here on Tuesday. Puvvada's son drowned

KHAMMAM : Puvvada Uday Kumar, CPI floor leader in Khammam municipality, AIYF State body member and son of CPI leader Puvvada Nageswara Rao was drowned in a well near the Mamata Medical College here on Tuesday.

Quoting the family sources, sub-divisional police officer R. S. Bhandari said that Uday Kumar slipped into the well when he was trying to take stock of the condition of the pumpsets installed for drawing water.

The body was sent for post-mortem examination. - Staff Reporter

Jatara windfall for RTC

WARANGAL : The APSRTC has earned a revenue of Rs. 7.9 crores by operating special buses for the Sammakka Sarakka jatara held at Medaram village in the district.

RTC Director S. Jaganmohan Rao and Regional Manager G. Venkatanarayana have said the corporation operated a total of 1,825 buses and transported over eight lakhs to and from different corners of the State. - Staff Reporter

Rs. 25,000 for Bima Gram

TIRUPATI : The Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has declared Baitakodiyambedu of Nagalapuram mandal in Chittoor district as Bima Gram and a cheque for Rs.25,000 has been handed over to the village sarpanch by South Central Zonal Manager T. Chatopadhyaya.

70 huts gutted

VIZIANAGARAM : Seventy huts were destroyed in a fire accident at Dasarapeta in Jiyyammavalasa mandal in the agency on Monday. Pattadar passbooks, cash and paddy stacks were reduced to ashes.

ITDA Project Officer A.K. Sinha and Parvathipuram Revenue Divisional Officer B. Satyanarayana took up relief operations.

The fire was put out after midnight, according to fire office sources. -Correspondent

Six-month jail for negligent driving

VIZIANAGARAM: Additional First Class Magistrate N. Annapoorna Sri has sentenced a lorry driver Sk. Meera Saheb to six months' imprisonment and Rs. 1400 fine for negligent driving which resulted in the death of four perosns in a stationary auto at Savaravilli in Bhogapuram mandal on December 4, 2003. -Correspondent

Award for dentist

Kakinada: Addala Satyanarayana, dental surgeon, has been presented the best zone chairman award in the Region II level by the Lions Regional Chairman C.C.S. Raju in recognition of his excellence in community service at a function held here on Tuesday.

Dr. Satyanarayana has conducted several medical awareness and service camps and provided free medical aid to the poor. -Correspondent

Five get life term for murder

ADILABAD : First Additional District Judge D. Minni Dhanalakshmi on Tuesday sentenced five persons to undergo life imprisonment and pay a fine of Rs. 1,000 each in a murder case.

The convicted persons are Pittala Purushottam, Pittala Rajesh, Pittala Mohan, Pittala Raju and Bommidi Shankar, all residents of Medariwada in Mancherial. They were convicted for conspiring and murdering Kandula Shankar, brother-in-law of Purushottam on August 9, 2002. - Staff Reporter
