Bangalore: Examinations mean frayed tempers and raw nerves for many. This is a testing time, not just for students but also parents and teachers, who constantly try to keep students motivated. Counsellor Ali Khwaja says: "There has been a significant increase in the number of students and parents seeking guidance for examination stress this season. In fact, it is parents who are more worried than their children." Effective time management and preparation are the key to being relaxed as the examinations approach. "As many schools these days conduct mock examinations, most students are well versed with the syllabus. However, they should guard against complacency. Cramming and last-minute studies add to the pressure. It is advisable to solve sample papers. Techniques such as mnemonics and mind-mapping help in effective recall," Malathy Narayan, teacher at National Public School, says. Group study helps break the monotony. Many schools conduct special classes that provide guidelines to reduce performance anxiety, she adds. When it comes to combating examination stress, there is one thing that counsellors and teachers agree upon: the importance of a healthy environment at home. Though the importance of having a conducive atmosphere is a well-known fact, many families are still not able to provide relaxed environs, Dr. Khwaja says. "The greatest challenge is to keep my daughter motivated during study holidays. I try not to be pushy and impose absolute restrictions such as disconnecting the cable or Internet connection," Veena Jayanth, a parent, says. Parents of those studying away from home have a tough time monitoring their children. It is not unusual for parents and teachers to be as worried as or more than the students. However, it is necessary to let children know that they are trusted.
