HYDERABAD: Deputy Mayor G. Subash Chanderji has urged Mayor T. Krishna Reddy to convene a special meeting of the elected council of Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad to discuss hawkers' welfare and other crucial issues.

In a letter addressed to Mr. Reddy, a copy of which was released to the press on Thursday, the Deputy Mayor said relief and rehabilitation should be provided to hawkers before they are evicted from the main roads as per the court orders. The removal of illegal encroachments and unauthorised constructions should also be debated.

He wanted a resolution to be passed for setting up of a multi-speciality hospital at a suitable place in Secunderabad, Hyderabad and also in the old city for providing medical facilities to all MCH workers engaged on contract basis.

Mr. Chanderji pointed out that over 10,000 workers were on contract and though deductions were being made regularly towards ESI facilities they was not being deposited with the Labour Department depriving the daily wagers of proper medicare.

The Deputy Mayor said the special meeting should also convey a unanimous message to the Government for directing Hyderabad Urban Development Authority to divert 50 per cent of income generated from sale of open lands through public auction to MCH for development of slums.

The MCH had handed over a piece of land opposite KIMS Hospital to HUDA last year.

The latter had recently disposed of five acres in Jubilee Hills to spend for localities outside MCH limits instead of spending it within its limits, he added.
