Demands of some conservancy workers met

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: Two days after they protested at the Chennai Corporation headquarters, a section of conservancy workers had their demands met on Friday when the civic agency handed over government orders regularising their jobs.

The Corporation handed over the orders to 1,688 conservancy workers who were among the protesters on Wednesday. The regularisation of their jobs had been delayed due to a resolution passed in the Corporation council earlier this year.

However, after the protests, the Corporation wrote to the Municipal Administration department, recalling the resolution. The workers had said that through an order earlier this month, the State Government had regularised the jobs of conservancy workers in all municipalities in the State barring the Chennai Corporation.

The Madras Corporation Red Flag Union that led the protests at Ripon Buildings thanked the Corporation administration for considering their demands and acting speedily.

The regularisation of the employees will cost the civic agency an additional Rs.5.5 crore annually towards salaries.
