College convocation held

About 260 graduates and postgraduates received certificates

TAMBARAM: The eighth convocation and college day celebrations of Prince Shri Venkateshwara Arts and Science College, Gowrivakkam, was held on Friday.

About 260 graduates and post-graduates received their certificates from V. Varaprasada Rao, Secretary, Information and Tourism Department.

Mr. Rao urged students to achieve excellence in their field of specialisation. Competition was intense in the job market, he said, urging students to aim at specialising in premier research institutes. Distributing cash awards to meritorious students and university rank holders, Syed Abdul Hameed, Regional Joint Director, Collegiate Education, Chennai region, said the graduates should consider themselves fortunate as a large number of underprivileged youth in the country still did not have access to educational institutions.

T.N. Sathya and Preetha who secured gold medals for coming first in the Madras University examinations in M.Sc Biotechnology and M.Sc Applied Microbiology respectively and P. Amudha from the B.Com department (gold medal in Tamil) received special prizes. K. Vasudevan, chairman, welcomed the gathering and M. Uma, principal, read out the annual report.
