Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Offices of profit

This refers to the editorial "Ms. Bachchan and offices of profit" (March 8). It may be difficult to identify what constitutes an office of profit.

Parliament should therefore pass an Act that prohibits MPs and MLAs from occupying any office in government, government-controlled and government-sponsored organisations during their tenure.

M.N. Srinivasan,
Vellore, T.N.

The Election Commission's recommendation that Jaya Bachchan be disqualified as Member of Parliament will trigger a bunch of complaints by disgruntled elements.

The recommendation is a mockery of a law that is out of sync with the present times. It is time the provision was deliberated upon in the interests of equal opportunities to all.
Ushadevi & S.B.Rao,

Ruwi, Muscat

There is no question that Ms. Bachchan should go. Parliament may not be in agreement with the Election Commission's recommendation but the rationale behind it should be understood.

The point is not whether the motive is political or personal. Since there is merit in the complaint, Ms. Bachchan should resign.
