Opinion - News Analysis

Corrections and clarifications

  • The lead story "Bomb blasts rock Varanasi, 21 killed" (Chennai city, March 8, 2006, page 1), mentions the first blast taking place on March 7 near the Sankat Mochan temple, which it said was adjacent to the Kashi Vishwanath temple. On the other hand, the KBK graphic depicts them being far apart. The information in the map is right.

  • A single judge of the Delhi High Court Justice Nandrajog, and not Justice Vikramjit Singh as we mentioned ("Court notice to Jethmalani", March 8, 2006), had allowed a defamation suit filed by Ram Jethmalani against Dr. Subramanian Swamy for alleged defamation by stating in 1995 before the Jain Commission that he (Jethmalani) had received funds from the LTTE. Dr. Subramanian Swamy has gone in appeal and the Division Bench of Justices Virendra Jain and Rekha Sharma has issued notice to Mr. Jethmalani.

  • Quit or offered to do so? (Briefly, "Vora meets Tiwari", March 6, 2006, page 1). N.D. Tiwari has only offered to step down as Uttaranchal Chief Minister, and has not quit, as the PTI report says.

  • Perhaps it was a case of the magic of the silver screen rubbing off on real life when Hamsavardhan became Vishnuvardhan. (Chennai city, "Rising Star awards presented", March 7, 2006, page 2.) The caption of the picture got the name of this award winner wrong.
