Not big on laughs

UNDERCOVER NANNY: Martin Lawrence in Big Momma's House 2

Big Momma's House 2 (English)

Director: John Whitesell

Cast: Martin Lawrence and Nia Long

We have seen all this before, including Martin Lawrence in fat suit and drag.

The concept of an outsider coming and setting the house in order is as old as Bawarchi with Rajesh Khanna cooking up a storm to settle things at home and then there was Govinda doing much of the same thing in Hero No 1.

In Big Momma's House 2, Martin Lawrence returns as FBI agent Malcolm Turner who has taken a desk job on the insistence of his pregnant wife, Sherry.

His partner is killed and Turner is back in the chase as Big Momma.

The assignment this time around is to be nanny to computer expert Tom Fuller's three children.

The children have their customised problems.

Fuller is developing a worm that would compromise security and Ms. Fuller is the typical over-scheduled suburban mom. There is a totally unconvincing sub-plot involving Sherry suspecting Malcolm's fidelity.

The film, a sequel to the 2000 movie, is funny if you laughed at the first film. It is basically a one-line running joke with different variations like Lawrence emerging out of the sea a la Bo Derrick cornrows and all. Then there is Lawrence on a skateboard and tequila in the dog's water bowl. Lawrence is a talented actor but this film that he has also executive produced, is not really a showcase of his talents.
