Government blamed

for ryots' woes

HYDERABAD: The Telugu Desam Legislature Party (TDLP) has demanded that the Government take steps to provide remunerative prices to cotton and tomato farmers who were suffering hardship due to steep fall in their market prices.

The TDLP has demanded that the Government pay compensation to tomato, cauliflower and cotton farmers who lost their crops. In a statement, the TDLP secretary E. Dayakar Rao and others criticised the Government for remaining a mute spectator to the woes of farmers. - Special Correspondent

Mala Mahanadu's appeal

HYDERABAD: The Mala Mahanadu has appealed to members of the community not to entertain the `Chalo Assembly' call given by some `vested interests' who were trying to use the community's name for their personal interests.

Addressing a press conference here on Sunday, Mala Mahanadu president J. Prabhakar Rao said the group that gave the call for `Chalo Assembly' was in no way connected with Mala Mahanadu. - Special Correspondent

17 policemen transferred

NIZAMABAD : Seventeen policemen have been transferred from the district following implementation of the GO No. 610.

Superintendent of Police Mahesh Chandra issued orders relieving them on Saturday.

The transferred policemen included ten constables, four Armed Reserve men, one Assistant Sub-Inspector and two Sub-Inspectors. - Staff Reporter

Three members of

robber gang nabbed

SRIKAKULAM : Three members of an inter-State gang have been arrested at the Chatrapur railway station. They arrested were: Lakan Bhosle, Srimanth Eswar Kai and Pardesh.

Speaking to newsmen here on Sunday, Superintendent of Police A.S. Gurappa said the gang had also committed offences in Maharashtra, Bhubaneswar and Bihar States. Fifty sovereigns of gold was seized from them. - Special Correspondent

Four regional rural

banks merged

HYDERABAD : The four regional rural banks sponsored by SBH -- Sri Saraswathi, Sri Sathavahana, Sri Rama and Golconda -- operating in Adilabad, Karimnagar, Nizamabad and Ranga Reddy districts have been amalgamated into Deccan Grameena Bank. Its head office is located at Dilsukhnagar, according to a Government of India notification.

After the amalgamation, the bank would have 166 branches with an aggregate business of Rs.1,600 crores. - Special Correspondent

Cotton destroyed in fire

NIZAMABAD : Cotton worth over Rs.10 lakhs was destroyed in fire at a ginning mill at Rameswarpally village in Kamareddy mandal on Sunday.

According to information reaching here, the mishap occurred when sparks from ginning machine ignited cotton bales.

detected, blasted

KHAMMAM : A special police party combing the forests of Venkatapuram detected four landmines near a ferry point on the banks of the Godavari river on Sunday. The landmines were allegedly planted by Maoist dalams for ambushing the combing parties. The police who found it difficult to unearth the mines, blasted them by keeping civilians away from the ferry point. - Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

ANANTAPUR : The burden of mounting debt due to successive crop failure and pressure from private lenders have allegedly forced a farmer of Yerraguntapalli village in Tadipatri rural mandal to commit suicide. The farmer, A. Laxmi Reddy, consumed pesticide on Saturday night. He was taken to hospital at Tadipatri where he died on Sunday. - Staff Reporter

ANGRAU to sign MoUs

TIRUPATI: Vice-Chancellor S. Raghuvardhan Reddy said Acharya N. G. Ranga Agricultural University was going to sign MoUs with eight universities in the US and the Netherlands.— Staff Reporter

ANANTAPUR: Fifty-four students have been booked for copying in the under-graduate examinations of the Sri Krishnadevaraya University in Anantapur and Kurnool districts. — Staff Reporter

SC welfare amount

KURNOOL: The standing committee of the Zilla Parishad, which met here under the chairmanship of ZP Chairman B. Venkatramudu on Sunday, passed a resolution urging the Government to release the amount under the SC welfare. — Staff Reporter

Headmaster, three teachers suspended

Self-immolation bid by housewife

ADILABAD: Sunita, 23, a housewife from Tosham under Gudihatnoor police station limits, suffered 80 per cent burns when she tried to immolate herself. It is alleged that she made the bid unable to bear the harassment of her in-laws for additional dowry. She was shifted to Hyderbad for further treatment. A case was registered and investigation was on. — Staff Reporter
