Novel surgery performed

Special Correspondent

Bangalore: Perhaps for the first time in the region, a shoulder joint surgery called "shoulder resurfacing" has been performed on a 62-year-old woman successfully.

The procedure was carried out at Columbia Asia Hospital here on Sharada by G. Balasubramanian, resurfacing and joint replacement specialist.

"Shoulder resurfacing is the latest advancement in treating shoulder joint arthritis, which follows the success of hip resurfacing," says Dr Balasubramanian.

Ms. Sharada was suffering for the past two years from acute pain in the left shoulder due to rheumatoid arthritis and was advised surgery.

Two weeks after the operation, she is now completely relieved of pain in the shoulder. She is able to take up many everyday chores she could not do earlier.
