CHENNAI: Corporates will bat for a social cause in a weekend limited over softball cricket tournament, where runs scored will go to save a cancer patient's life.

16 teams participating

The fund-raiser event for the Adyar-based Cancer Institute will feature 16 teams vying for the L&T-Cancer Institute rolling trophy at the YMCA grounds on Saturday and Sunday.

Organised by the `Friends of the Cancer Institute', the L&T Inter-corporate softball cricket tournament is sponsored by L&T with the support of Saint Gobain, HP, Kumaran Silks, Hyundai, Polaris, Sony and Samsung.

Sending a message

Besides raising much-needed funds for the premier cancer institution, the event will also put out the message that cancer is treatable and curable if detected early, L&T official V. S. Ramana and Cancer Institute's surgical oncologist Ravi Kannan told a press conference on Tuesday.

The participating teams are L&T ECC, Cairn Energy, E-Funds, Verizon, Satyam, Saint Gobain, Polaris, Sundaram Finance, Playboys (Tamil television stars), Grundfos, Computer Associates, Times of India, Max New York Life, Cancer Institute, Quality Inn Sabari and Cognizant Technologies.

The 12-over-a-side format will provide each team three matches in league play before they enter the knockout phase. Apart from the Rs. 25,000 entry fee, teams can celebrate every four/sixer scored by contributing Rs. 100/Rs.200 to the cause.

After distributing the fixture to the captains of the competing sides on Tuesday, R. Rajshekar, project coordinator, Cancer Institute, said the game twinning a cause was a better way for corporates to get involved in fund-raising for the institution and spreading cancer awareness in society.
