TAMBARAM: Extending their support to residents, who are protesting against the land acquisition scheme for the proposed airport modernisation programme, traders and merchants closed their shops in several places in Tirusulam, Meenambakkam, Pallavaram, Pozhichalur, Pammal and Anakaputhur on Tuesday. According to residents and activists, the response for closure of shops was near total. Shops even in those areas that would not be affected by the proposed land acquisition remained closed. Later at a meeting at Murugan Palace in Pozhichalur, Vikram Raja, president of the South Chennai unit of the Tamil Nadu Vanigar Sangangalin Peravai pledged the support of his organisation to the cause of the residents.
