Noble intention

The intention of the framers of the Constitution in stating that law-makers should not hold an office of profit is obvious. It also follows that it will not be within the rights of the lawmakers to define "office of profit." Fairness requires that the provision remains the way it is, leaving it to the judiciary and the Election Commission/President to deal with situations case by case. The fact that our lawmakers are prepared to put their heads together regardless of party affiliations only shows their self-interest. Interestingly, a win for Ms. Gandhi in her pocket-borough is not really needed to prove anything least of all to make a case for bringing in this new law, given the "all-party consensus"!
