Defacing walls

This refers to the report on the representatives of political parties complaining to the Election Commission that a ban on writing on walls amounts to stifling democracy. The parties had stated that they invariably took permission from private house-owners before using their walls for sending out a political message. Such statements are far from true. In fact, the disfiguring of private walls takes place at night; most of the time, the owner is unaware his property is being "used" thus. And, most owners keep quiet out of fear of reprisal. The Election Commission should stick to its stand.

The Commission should ruthlessly enforce the rule without exception. There will be an enormous savings on paints, and other materials besides the cost of repainting the walls.
