Kolkata , March 30

Abolition of land ceilings Act, improvement of roads and promotion healthcare facilities, general education, vocational training and small scale sector has been identified as the five thrust areas by the Merchants Chamber of Commerce.

Addressing a press conference, Mr Santosh Saraf, the newly-elected President of the chamber, said that the thrust areas were identified after considering the changing priorities in national planning and development.

The chamber urged the West Bengal Government to abolish the Urban Land Ceiling Act and West Bengal Land Reforms Act.

It added that the move would help in the growth of agriculture and agri-processing industries.

The chamber would try to promote more healthcare centres, diagnostic facilities and private hospitals in the cities and the suburbs.

This is to meet the requirements of the rural population. Private sector participation in this area is also needed.

"We feel that the State Government should come forward and help the private sector by providing incentives, land at low cost, single window clearance and reduced taxes", Mr Saraf said.

He also mentioned medical insurance.

Regarding general education and vocational training, the chamber felt that there was an urgent need for minimum education for the masses and "quality higher education" on a large scale.
