CHENNAI: The Madras High Court on Wednesday stayed a Tamil Nadu Electricity Board (TNEB) order altering the eligibility condition for pension benefits and reducing the rate of pension for its employees. Justice D. Murugesan granted the interim stay after admitting a writ petition filed by S. Pancharathinam, general secretary, Central Organisation of Tamil Nadu Electricity Employees. According to the impugned order, only employees who had put in at least 33 years' service were eligible for full pension, as against the existing 30 years. It said only 50 per cent of the average salary of the last 10 months would be considered while determining the quantum of pension. Existing rules provide for calculating pension on the basis of 50 per cent of the last 10 months average pay or 50 per cent of the last drawn pay, whichever is higher. The Board said it was following the modifications effected for Government servants. Mr. Justice Murugesan also ordered notice to the TNEB chairman.
