Gen. Thimayya remembered

ANNIVERSARY: Minister in charge of Kodagu Ramachandra Gowda paying homage at the memorial of Gen. K.S. Thimayya on the occasion of his birth centenary, in Bangalore on Friday.

BANGALORE: The birth centenary of the former Chief of the Army Staff General K.S. Thimayya was observed here on Friday with homage being paid at his memorial on the grounds of the ASC Centre (South) here.

On behalf of the State Government, Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda, who is in charge of Kodagu district, paid floral tributes to the late General who died in Cyprus while heading a U.N. peacekeeping force in 1966. He was the Chief of the Army Staff in the late 1950s.

`Exemplary contribution'

Mr. Ramachandra Gowda said Gen. Thimayya's contribution to the nation and world peace was exemplary. Soldiers from Kodagu have done the country proud, he said.

The birth centenary of the General will be celebrated on a grand scale in Madikeri on April 7.

The Army's Karnataka, Kerala and Goa Sub-Area Commander, Brigadier M.K.G. Menon; Kodava Samaja president K.M. Appaiah, Gen. Thimayya's daughter and son-in-law, Mirle Chengappa and Major General K.M. Chengappa, were present.
