BANGALORE: The State Government will soon recruit over 10,000 headmasters for higher primary schools, Minister for Primary and Secondary Education Basavaraj S. Horatti has said.

Speaking at the inauguration of a State-level educational convention organised by the Karnataka State Primary School Teachers' Association and the High School Teachers' Association, the Minister said, "I am aware that most of the higher primary schools in the State do not have headmasters and physical education teachers. We will soon appoint headmasters and PE teachers for the better functioning of the higher primary schools."

The Government was working on a policy to curb sexual harassment in schools, the Minister said.

Payment of salaries

Assuring the teachers that they would get their salaries by the fifth of every month, Mr. Horatti said all disparities in the salaries of teachers would be set right. "The recommendations of the Pay Commission are being considered. Your demand for wages on a par with Central Government teachers will also be looked into," he said.

Responding to complaints of harassment and corruption by clerical staff in the offices of the Deputy Director of Public Instruction and Block Education Officers, the Minister said: "All clerks, managers and superintendents who have served for more than two years in these offices will be deployed to work in rural schools at least for five years."

Pointing out that henceforth the Government would not be nominating members of School Development and Monitoring Committees, Mr. Horatti said parents of children studying in a particular school would be chosen as members.

He also released a souvenir brought out by the organisers to mark the occasion.
