SVIMS inks pact on stem cell research

TIRUPATI: The Sri Venkateswara Institute of Medical Sciences (SVIMShas signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Frontier Lifeline Private Limited, a unit of Cherian Foundation, Chennai, for cooperation in stemcell research. The MoU was signed by SVIMS Director G. Subramanyam and representatives of the Cherian Foundation at the former's chambers on Friday.— Staff Reporter

Man run over by cart at Sri Rama Navami fete

KURNOOL: A person identified as Ramasubba Reddy, 55, was run over by the decorated cart at Sriramanavami celebrations at Nandavaram in Kurnool district on Friday. According to reports, the oxen drawing the cart carrying the processional deities were frightened by the heavy crowd accompanied by drum beats and ran helter skelter causing the death of Ramasubba Reddy - while a few others sustained injuries. — Staff Reporter

Thorat takes over as NABARD chief

Hyderabad : Y.S.P. Thorat has taken over as Chairman of NABARD, according to a press release.

Dr. Thorat, who was Managing Director of the bank and was made its Chairman on April 5, took charge on Friday.

He holds a doctorate in economics and degrees in political science and law. Prior to joining NABARD in 2004, he was the Executive Director of Reserve Bank of India. He served as RBI nominee on the Boards of Oriental Bank of Commerce, Punjab National Bank and EXIM Bank. - Special Correspondent

Man electrocuted

MADANAPALLE : A resident of Yenumulavaripalle in Madanapalle rural mandal, Tarigonda Venkatappa, 48, was electrocuted in the early hours of Wednesday when he went to his fields for watering the paddy corp.

He came in contact with a snapped LT line wire. He died on the spot. Transco ASE Samuel consoled the bereaved family.-Correspondent

Train passengers robbed

ADILABAD: Three New Delhi-bound passengers of AP Express, which departed at Secunderabad on Friday, were allegedly robbed by some unidentified persons. One of them, Himanshu Shankar Naik of Orissa, complained to the railway police at Kagaznagar that they were offered bananas by a couple after the train left Secunderabad. Subsequently, the three became unconscious and of them, Himanshu, later gained consciousness. They were being treated at Sirpur-T hospital. - Staff Reporter

CITU's plea to YSR on relief for fishermen

Hyderabad : State unit of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday seeking proper relief and rehabilitation for the Gangavaram fishermen families.

A delegation of CITU, led by committee's vice-president S. Punyavathi and secretary P. Ajay Kumar, urged the Chief Minister not to delay conceding the reasonable demands of the fishermen. - Special Correspondent

Two labourers drowned

VIZIANAGARAM : S. Pentayya, 25, and D. Mahesh, 19, labourers working in a quarry at Jagaram, were drowned in Jami anicut when they took a dip to beat the heat on Thursday afternoon.

Pilgrim fatally run over

KURNOOL : A pilgrim from Bellary in Karnataka was run over by a truck near Atmakur in Kurnool district on Friday.

According to reports, a group of pilgrims from Naganahalli were on their way to Srisailam on foot for worship after Ugadi festival. When hardly they crossed the town after night halt, a truck dashed against the group killing him on the spot while four others suffered injuries. After post-mortem examination, his body was sent to the native place.-Staff Reporter

Heat wave conditions

HYDERABAD: Heat wave conditions are prevailing in parts of Telangana due to dry winds sweeping across the State from the north.

According to a forecast, Nizamabad, Medak, Ranga Reddy and Hyderabad (urban) districts are likely to come under the grip of heat wave on Saturday. On Friday, Nizamabad recorded 43 degrees Celsius, the State's highest for the day. — Special Correspondent
