CITU supports medicos' stir

HYDERABAD : The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) city committee has extended its support to the striking medicos and urged the Government to solve their problems.

In a statement on Sunday, S. Narsimha Reddy, president, and J. Venkatesh, general secretary of the city committee, demanded withdrawal of the GO No. 19 immediately and deduct the nine grace marks added in the PG entrance examination. They sought action against the persons involved in the grace marks episode. - Staff Reporter

RTC records lowest accident rate

HYDERABAD : The APSRTC has recorded the lowest accident rate among State transport undertakings in the country.

According to M.V. Krishna Rao, Managing Director of the RTC, the corporation is able to bring down accident rate for lakh km from 0.19 per cent to 0.10 per cent in 2004-05. It was 0.11 per cent in 2005-06. In compliance with the High Court's directive, a special drive has been launched to conduct medical examination for all RTC drivers, he has said in a statement. - Special Correspondent

MRPS `padayatra' from April 15

HYDERABAD : The Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS), headed by Krupakar, will launch 2,000-km `padayatra' on April 15 from Ongole to press the demand for categorisation of Scheduled Castes.

The rally, after passing through Prakasam, Nellore, Kadapa, Anantapur, Kurnool, Mahabubnagar and Ranga Reddy districts, would reach Hyderabad on June 1 and conclude with a public meeting (`Madigala tudumdebba'), said Mr. Krupakar in a statement on Sunday. - Special Correspondent

Wife of police firing victim gets job

VISAKHAPATNAM : Ch. Devi, wife of Nookaraju who was killed in police firing on March 27, has been appointed an attender in Gangavaram Ports Limited (GPL).

The appointment order -- the first to be received by those getting affected due to development of a private port at Gangavaram -- was handed over by Minister for Commercial Taxes Konathala Ramakrishna to Devi on Sunday.

Devi's husband died when the police opened fire on fishermen to thwart their attempts to stall construction work of the port. -Staff Reporter

MLA's hasty retreat from Gangavaram

VISAKHAPATNAM : Pendurthy MLA (Congress) Tippala Gurumurthy Reddy's attempts to regain his hold among fishermen of Gangavaram failed again on Sunday with the villagers forcing him to leave.

The MLA had to make a hasty retreat for the second time in four days when fishermen reminded him on the reported promise made by him to support their demand for stopping port construction work at the talks held with the all-party team at the Collectorate on Saturday. - Staff Reporter

Farmer ends life

NIZAMABAD : A farmer, Ativarapu Venkaiah (35) of Yellareddy mandal headquarters, allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his residence on Sunday.

According to information reaching here, Venkaiah took a loan of Rs. 1 lakh for cultivation. As a part of the paddy crop dried up following non-availability of water he incurred losses. Poor financial position is said to be the cause of the suicide.-Staff Reporter

Boy dies of gastroenteritis?

KHAMMAM : A ten-year-old boy, Munagala Rajasekhar, died with symptoms of gastroenteritis at Bhimavaram village of Errupalem mandal on Sunday. About 90 others, who were taken ill in the village, had treatment in primary health centres of Banigandlapadu and Errupalem.- Staff Reporter

CPI(M) plans dharna on April 17

NELLORE: The CPI(M) will stage dharna in front of all municipalities and municipal corporations on April 17 against the Government's move to fix meters to domestic drinking water connections.

Announcing this at a press conference on Sunday, CPI (M) MP P. Madhu alleged that the Government was planning to privatise even the distribution of domestic water supply in urban areas.

Havaldar cremated with State honours

MADANAPALLE: Mallem Venkataswamy, 35, a havaldar, from Madanapalle rural Vempalle village, died after the military truck in which he was travelling turned turtle, at Jammu on Friday. His body was brought to his native village Vempalle on April 8. He was cremated with State honours. Venkataswamy leaves behind - wife Surekha and two sons. — Correspondent

Pestering claims life

ANANTAPUR: Alleged pestering of a girl by a youth in the fourth road locality here resulted in a suicide bid by the girl and her mother, in which the mother lost her life on Saturday.

According to the police, one Siva was allegedly pestering Afreen, 16, and fixed a deadline to accept his marriage proposal or face the consequences.

On Tuesday evening, the mother-daughter duo consumed poison. They were taken to a hospital where Dilshad, 38, succumbed while, Afreen is still battling for life.
