PICKING THE BEST: Workers grading raw arecanut in Adimali market in Kerala's Idukki district. A decline in yield has propped up demand and in turn, arecanut prices.

This has resulted in old stocks of white arecanut being cleared. The current bullish trend could be attributed to big traders in North India buying white arecanut in huge quantities and hoarding them on hopes of prices rising further.

Currently, new white areca is ruling between Rs 6,620 and Rs 8,510, up around Rs 3,000 since the beginning of the year.
