Chief Secretary's term extended

HYDERABAD : The term of Chief Secretary T.K. Dewan, who was to retire on superannuation on April 30, has been extended by three months.

According to an official press release, the State Government has felt the need to continue Mr. Dewan's services as the implementation of prestigious scheme launched by it recently required streamlining. - Special Correspondent

DSP trapped

HYDERABAD : Anti-Corruption Bureau officials on Friday arrested Vikarabad Deputy Superintendent of Police Sai Krishna at his office on the charge of receiving Rs. 2- lakh bribe from a complainant. He tested positive when subjected to a chemical test, ACB Joint Director G.R. Ravinder Reddy told The Hindu .

A person, B. Ramulu, was found murdered in the limits of Chevella police station a month ago. The victim's son approached the DSP for speeding up investigation since the latter was also in-charge of the Chevella sub-division.- Staff Reporter

CPI training camp

HYDERABAD : A three-day training camp for members of the State council and select leaders of the CPI from districts will be held at Babu Jagjivan Ram Bhavan at Kothapet from May 13.

Golden crown offered to Lord

TIRUMALA : Organisers, belonging to Hyderbad-based Darthi drug company, on Friday donated a golden crown and a set of `mangalasutrams' to be adorned to the processional deities of the Lord.

YSR releases book on farmers

HYDERABAD : Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy on Friday released a book, `Molakala Punnami,' on the woes of farmers of Rayalaseema, written by Vempalli Gangadhar of Kadapa. Hyderabad : Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee president K. Keshava Rao has appointed D.V. Satyanarayana Rao as in-charge of the DCCs of West Godvari and Krishna districts while D. Nagender will be the in-charge of East Godavari and Guntur districts. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD : The 39th all-India competitions in music and dance - 2006 will be held from April 30 to May 7 at Andhra Mahila Sabha College premises.

EAMCET hall-tickets

HYDERABAD : EAMCET-2006 convenor L.V.A.R. Sarma has said that those who do not receive hall-tickets by April 30 can download the same from the JNTU website www.jntuap.ac.in after April 30. However, they need to be signed by a Gazetted Officer.

Duplicate hall-tickets can be taken at test centres also but students need to take a photograph for the same. - Staff Reporter

119 bags of PDS rice seized

KADAPA: Revenue officials seized 119 bags of rice allotted for the Public Distribution System (PDS) from the house of one Ashrafunnisa in Kothapalle in Rayachoti town on Friday. Rayachoti MRO Srinivasulu, Revenue Inspector Ramana and Assistant SI Khan raided the house on a tip off and seized the rice, said to be valued around Rs. 29,000, according to officials. — Staff Reporter

Service tax on BSNL products

TIRUPATI: BSNL Tirupati has informed that the service tax and education cess have been revised from 10.2% to 12.24% with effect from April 18 on its basic phone services, cellular/WLL services and STD PTs as per the Finance Act 2006. The unit call charge of India Telephone Card would be Re.1 per MCU with effect from May 1, but the talk value of the BSNL Excel recharge coupons and top-up coupons would remain unchanged, an official release said. — Staff Reporter

Call to check entry of foreign varsities

KURNOOL: Former national vice-president of AISF, Eeswaraiah, called for checking the entry of foreign universities into the country. Addressing a conference of AISF here on Friday, he said foreign universities would promote commercialisation of education. The trend was setback to the interests of the weaker sections, he alleged. ANMs seek promotional avenues

KAKINADA: The district unit of the United Medical and Health Employees Union has appealed to the Government to increase the number of promotional posts of women ANMs. The union in a representation to the Collector has demanded that workload should be reduced by filling up the vacant posts. It also wanted the contract workers services to be regularised and the strength of staff nurses to be raised commensurate with the beds strength in the hospitals.-Correspondent

RAJAHMUNDRY: Free Yoga camp is going to begin here from May 1. In a statement on Friday Mr. Devarapalli Raghavulu, renowned yoga master of East and West Godavari districts said that the camp will be held at the local Cosmopolitan Club and all age groups, from 8 year-olds to 80 can avail this opportunity.

One arrested on cheating charge

RAJAHMUNDRY: Police have arrested K. Ramagopal and remanded him to custody on Friday in connection with cheating K.V. Subrahmanya Daivanayakulu along with his wife Naga Lakshmi and brother-in-law Ch. Kasi Viswanatham. While police arrested the main accused, two others accomplices were absconding. In a complaint lodged by Daivanayakulu of Tadepalligudem in West Godavari, it was stated that the accused and co-accused had taken a loan of Rs. 2.10 lakhs from him after pledging fake articles as genuine gold ones. -Staff Reporter

10-year jail for Bhimolu man in rape case

ELURU: Kovvuru Assistant Sessions Judge S. Narasimha Rao on Friday sentenced Vemuri Israel of Bhimolu under Gopalapuram police limits to undergo 10 years rigorous imprisonment for raping a minor girl. He committed the crime when the ST girl was grazing cattle in the fields. - Staff Reporter

ELURU: The police arrested one Didla Prasad of NRP Agraharam under Undi police station limits on Friday on the charge of outraging the modesty of a minor girl. The accused persons committed the offence when the girl was alone in her house. She is working in a fisheries company. - Staff Reporter

guard arrested for using customer's ATM card

Guard held, ATM money recovered

KHAMMAM: The police arrested a guard and recovered Rs. 47,000 from him in Palavancha town on Friday. The guard had allegedly drawn about Rs. 50,000 from the account of a customer of Andhra Bank in the last three days using his ATM card.

The customer, who forgot to take out his card from the ATM machine after drawing some amount from his account three days ago, found Rs. 50,000 missing from his account. The police and bank officials acted swiftly and recovered the card and the money from the guard.
