YSR greets workers

HYDERABAD : Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has greeted workers in the State and their families on the occasion of May Day.

In a message on Sunday, Dr. Reddy said the Government was committed to the welfare of workers and their families. He called for sustained efforts to improve relations between labour and managements. He said the Government was firm on putting an end to child labour. It would also encourage education of the girl child, he added. - Special Correspondent

State urged to continue mid-day meal scheme

HYDERABAD : The State committee of All-India Students' Federation and Jana Vignana Vedika have urged the Government to continue the mid-day meal scheme during the summer.

C. Saidulu, secretary of AISF, while criticising the Government's decision to suspend the scheme, said students depending on food provided by Government would suffer.

V. Lakshmana Reddy, president, and T.V. Rao, general secretary of the vedika, in a separate statement, said noon meal scheme was being implemented for two decades in Tamil Nadu. - Special Correspondent

Archakas demand DA at old rates

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Archaka Samakhya, while welcoming the Government's decision to sanction revised pay scales to archakas, has demanded payment of DA at old rates.

In a statement here on Sunday, samakhya leaders thanked Endowments Minister J.C. Diwakar Reddy, Revenue Secretary D.C. Rosaiah and Commissioner A.B. Krishna Reddy for Government's gesture. - Special Correspondent

Left parties hold talks on panchayat polls

HYDERABAD : The two major Left parties -- CPI (M) and CPI -- have, in principle, decided to contest together in the forthcoming elections to local bodies.

Intensifying their efforts for the ensuing elections, CPI (M) State secretary B.V. Raghavulu and his CPI counterpart K. Narayana, who met here on Sunday held detailed discussions about the existing political situation in the State and line that should be adopted by them in the polls. The parties have asked their respective district units to hold meetings and arrive at a consensus on the tie-up. - Special Correspondent

Student ends life

ANANTAPUR : One Laxmanna, 17, who appeared for the Intermediate first year examination this year allegedly committed suicide by consuming pesticide at his house at Yerraguntla village in Rapthadu mandal on Saturday night.

According to the police, the student was in depression after the results of the first year examination in which he was failed. He was a student of the Government Junior College in the New Town here and used to stay in Anantapur itself. - Staff Reporter

Opposition to OBC quota decried

HYDERABAD : Several backward classes organisations on Sunday warned those opposing the proposed 27 per cent reservation for OBCs in IIMs and IITs.

R. Krishnaiah, president, Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association, A. Ramkoti, president, AP State BC United Forum, and J. Srinivas Goud, president, Andhra Pradesh BC Students' Association, cautioned those opposing the reservations. - Special Correspondent

Loss of boats Rs. 1 cr.

HYDERABAD: The loss of `m.v Shanti Sree' and `m.l. Krishna', the two motor launches belonging to AP Tourism Development Corporation (APTDC) which were hijacked, blasted and sunk by CPI (Maoists) near Kadakuntla village, has been estimated to be around Rs. 1crore. When contacted, APTDC Managing Director Raymond Peter said it had been a difficult job for the crew to take the boats upstream from Nagarjunasagar towards Srisailam. -Staff Reporter
