Bangalore: Students of Prasiddhi School, Vasanthanagar took out a rally against child labour here on Monday. Over 50 children, holding placards, took part in the rally and raised slogans against child labour. "All children have the right to education. People who employ child labourers must be severely punished. Government is providing free education to children belonging to the poorer sections of society and parents must encourage their children to attend school and not send them to work," said Nikhila, a ninth standard student. "Child labourers encounter several problems and many a time they end up as drug addicts," said Tanusha. J. Bharathan, music and dance teacher of the school, said that the rally was aimed at creating awareness on child labour among the public. "In India, it is difficult to eliminate child labour. However, children must know its ill-effects on society. I am confident that our children will take this message to their parents and other elders," he said.
Science camp
Twenty-six students took part in the three-day science camp organised at the MES Kishore Kendra recently. The participants were divided into four groups and each group was named after a scientist. There was the Einstein group, Chandrashekar group, Raman group and P.C. Ray group. Resource person Shivakumar explained the models to the participants and asked them to prepare similar ones. The spring balance was given to the Einstein group, the Chandrashekar group handled the lever systems, the P.C. Ray group worked on the well project and the Raman group had to construct the complicated parallax vision model. The participants were given the tools. Though many participants were using the tools for the first time, they handled them well. All the groups completed the models in time and explained them to the other students. On the second day, the "young inventors" were presented four new tasks.
The Chandrashekar group was asked to work on the pulley system, the Einstein group was assigned the task of constructing a solar water heater and solar fan, the P.C. Ray team had to work on a windmill project, while the Raman team was given the parallax vision model. The third day began with the formation of three groups. One group worked on a "vanishing hat" model, the second group had to answer questions on the "Big Bang" theory, while the last group was to assemble an astronomical model. Later, all the models were displayed at an exhibition that was open to the public. The participants were given the certificate of participation, a high quality geometry set and a screwdriver. Mr. Shivakumar gave away surprise gifts to some students. At the valedictory function, headmistress Kasturi Parthasarathy introduced the resource persons. Principal R.K.
