ANANTAPUR: The Panchayat Raj Teachers' Union (PRTU) has suggested that the State Government bifurcate the Education Department into administration and academic wings to improve the performance of Government schools.

Talking to newspersons here on Thursday, State president of PRTU B. Mohan Reddy felt that supervision of teachers was poor due to shortage of deputy DEOs. The posts of deputy DEOs did not increase in proportion with the number of teachers over the years, he said.

Bifurcation of the department and better supervision of teachers could improve the performance of Government schools, he opined.

On the proposal of Education Minister to initiate action against headmasters of the schools which would `achieve' zero per cent results in SSC, Mr. Reddy said it would not be fair as teachers alone could not be held responsible for the poor show of tenth class students. Parents and Government should also share the responsibility, he said.

He sought to know whether the Government would give any increment or incentives to the headmasters concerned in case the schools achieved 100 per cent results in SSC. He was here to attend the district general body meeting of the PRTU.

Poor show

Meanwhile, Anantapur slipped to the bottom in the SSC results announced on Thursday by registering only 47.1 pass percentage. District Educational Officer V.S. Bhargava attributed the poor show to loss of classes during the controversial teachers' counselling. Teachers participating in the counselling did not take classes during the period, he said.

A review meeting would be held in a couple of days with headmasters to improve results from next year.
