Nominations sought for science prize

HYDERABAD: The B.M. Birla Science Centre has invited nominations from heads of research and educational institutions and universities for the B.M. Birla Science Prize in mathematics, physics, biology and chemistry.

They should be sent in triplicate, including a full list of publications and up to five of the best papers as also the specific work for nomination, curriculum vitae and the formal nomination itself to the Director-General, Birla Science Centre, Adarshnagar, before June 15. - Staff Reporter

Summer vacation for administrative tribunal

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Administrative Tribunal will remain closed during summer vacation from May 8 to June 2.

According to an official notification, only those applications which are of urgent nature would be placed for admission and interim orders before the vacation benches sitting in vacation courts on every Wednesday (May 10, 17, 24 and 31). - Special Correspondent

SSC student attempts suicide

Rajahmundry: SSC student Durga Bhavani of Subbaraopeta attempted suicide after she reportedly failed in the examination, the results of which were announced on Thursday.

According to the police, Bhavani went to the Church Gate area and enquired about the result at an Internet café. She later went to the Rail-cum-Road bridge across the Godavari and jumped into it. On information, the police pressed into service a tourism boat and rescued the girl. - Staff Reporter

Former V-C appointed Chairman of ICPR

VISAKHAPATNAM: The Centre has appointed former Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University K. Ramakrishna Rao Chairman of the Indian Council of Philosophical Research (ICPR). He will hold the position for three years.

ICPR, an autonomous national body to promote teaching and research in the country, was chaired till recently by former Union Minister Karan Singh. - Staff Reporter

RBI to issue new Rs. 500 notes

HYDERABAD: The Reserve Bank of India will shortly issue Rs. 500 denominations with inset letter `L' in both numbering panels in Mahatma Gandhi series 2005.

According to a press note issued here on Thursday, it would have additional/new security features bearing the signature of Governor Y.V. Reddy. - Special Correspondent

Village servants in protest mode

Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Village Servants' Association has decided to launch an agitation in support of its demands that included among other things increase in salaries.In a statement here on Thursday, president of the association D. Rajalingam and general secretary N. Lakshminarayana said that dharnas would be staged at mandal revenue offices on May 16 and at revenue divisional offices on May 23. - Special Correspondent

Mother, three children drowned

KURNOOL: Reportedly fed-up with alleged domestic violence, a woman and her three children committed suicide by jumping into a well at Chintakunta near Allagadda in Kurnool district on Thursday. According to reports, the woman, identified as Nagamani, tied one of the children Ajay Ganesh, 8, who knew how to swim, to her sari to avoid his survival. Others were identified as Lavanya, 6, and Pavan, 4. - Staff Reporter

Chittoor stands 19th in SSC pass percentage

CHITTOOR: The District Educational Officer Hymavathi told that 66.36 per cent was the district average of pass in the SSC examination. As many as 30,560 students passed the examination and the district secured 19th place in the State. A student of Ram Kakathiya English medium school at Piler secured highest marks of 517 and residential school at Palamaner and DPIP Velugu bridge school at Puttur got cent per cent passes.- Correspondent

BSNL assures `total connectivity

TIRUPATI: The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has assured to provide connectivity throughout Chittoor district soon. This could be either cellular or WLL coverage, general manager of Tirupati Telecom District R. Mani, said. Addressing the Telecom Advisory Committee meeting here on Thursday, he said that the district had cellular presence in 67 places, while work was on in 16 cell sites. This apart, as many as 56 cell sites had been proposed under the Phase-V programme. On the WLL front, while 24 sites were working, 24 more would be commissioned shortly, that would provide total connectivity in the entire district. - Staff Reporter

SVU bags research project on Pulicat

TIRUPATI: Department of Science and Technology has granted a major research project to Sri Venkateswara University for conducting research on 'Ecoresiliency srategies for Pulicat lake sanctuary biodiversity conservation'.

Pulicat is the second largest brackishwater lake in the country, spread over 670 sq.km near Chittoor-Nellore border, which is visited by more than 150 bird species every year

Protest staged

Kakinada: A number of courier service workers owing allegiance to the Cocanada Couriers Association took out a rally in the main streets of the city and staged dharna in front of the Collectorate on Thursday in protest against the move of the Central Government to impose restrictions on courier services.

G. Srinivas, president, and Bhagavan, secretary of the association, led the programme. Later they called on the Collector and presented a memorandum expressing their resentment over the move of the government to amend the India Post Office Act 1898, to grant exclusive privilege to the Postal Department to handle the letters up to a weight of 300 grams. - Correspondent

EAMCET centres inspected

KAKINADA: East Godavari Collector Praveen Prakash has inspected the EAMCET exam centres in the JNTU College of Engineering here on Thursday. College Principal K Satya Prasad, associate Professor Padma Raju, District Revenue Officer M Suryanarayana accompanied the Collector.

Later, the Collector said that EAMCET exams were conducted in all the twenty-three centres in the city in a foolproof and peaceful manner. He said the answer sheets would be kept at the SP's office till Thursday night and shifted to Hyderabad on Friday. - Correspondent

VISAKHAPATNAM: Chairman and Managing Director of Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. Abhiram Sharma said that MCL which celebrated May Day as Miners' Day, utilised the occasion to recognise and honour excellence in performance by employees.

The company adjudged 30 employees and officers as best performers and presented blazers with MCL logo to them. The performers were also categorised as cap-holders and jersey-holders. Categorising, awarding and recognising and continuously evaluating employees' performance had set a foundation for MCL which would take it to a commanding position, he said.
