Right step

Sir, — The major reshuffle of government officials is a step in the right direction. By announcing the appointment of officers with excellent track record to head Bangalore Mahanagara Palike, Bangalore Development Authority and other agencies of the city, the Chief Minister has made known his intent to make visible improvements. In the coming days, as the officers settle down and initiate steps for change, there is no doubt that this will be strongly resented by vested interests. The Chief Minister should demonstrate political will and back them without succumbing to pressure.

Run mini-buses

Sir, — At railway stations and the airport, people are at the mercy of autorickshaw and taxi drivers who demand exorbitant fares. The pre-paid system works on occasions though a few autorickshaw drivers defy the queue despite the presence of policemen. The time has come for the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) to run mini-buses to and from railway stations and airports at fixed hours round the clock to make life easier for passengers. It is hoped that the BMTC or a reputed private company would take up this work so that the passengers get relief soon. It is an ordeal to board the train or return to the city from Yeshwantpur railway station from where a number of train services start and terminate at odd hours.

Threat of rabies

Sir, — This is with reference to The Hindu report on stray dogs and the danger posed by them to residents. The children and the elderly are the most vulnerable. It is dangerous to go for a walk unless one is armed with a stick. It is also shocking that people are dying of rabies. Vaccinating dogs against rabies is an expensive proposition. Animal rights groups should understand the gravity of the problem.

Reduce fares

Sir, — The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced Volvo buses between Srinagar and Domlur with fares ranging between Rs. 9 and Rs. 20. Poor and middle-class passengers will not travel in these buses because of the high fares. Hence, the buses are plying with only a few passengers. The fares should be reduced. It will not be a loss to the BMTC, because more passengers will use Volvo services.
