Opinion - Letters to the Editor

Undernourished society

This refers to the editorial "India's children: imperilled by hunger" (May 10). That India accounts for one-third of the world's malnourished children, and the country's rate of malnutrition is 47 per cent demonstrates that our food resources are mismanaged, affecting both human development and economic growth. Unfortunately, the shameful paradox of poverty amid plenty fails to move the government to wage a war against malnutrition.

Abdullah Khan,

The editorial both enlightened and depressed me, for I have all along believed that India's economic boom has been accompanied by improving social conditions. It is unfortunate that in a country that boasts of soaring stock markets and successful space and nuclear partnerships, we have failed to address the more important issue of quality of human life. It is time our elected representatives stopped worrying about issues such as reservation and started working towards achieving more important goals.

Naivedya Parakkal,
Vellore, T.N.
