Bomb hoax at bank

Kakinada: A phone call from an anonymous caller saying a bomb had been planted at the Cinema Road branch of Andhra Bank created a scare. The bank manager's wife received the call at their residence at 2.30 pm and immediately alerted the police control room. A police team searched the bank premises only to discover the call was a hoax. - Correspondent

Explosives seized

ADILABAD: Nirmal division police on Tuesday seized 250 kg of liquid explosives being supplied to a contractor in Lokeswaram mandal in an auto. One Mallesh was arrested while the contractor, Srinivas, is still at large.

Nirmal CI Uday Kumar Reddy said the contractor of a lift irrigation scheme was using the explosives at the site. Mallesh, from Nalgonda, was transporting 100 explosives to the site without proper licence. - Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD: The Government has issued orders announcing the schedule for promotions of gazetted headmasters and mandal education officers on May 11. Post office working hours extended

HYDERABAD: Business hours of post offices in Andhra Pradesh Circle are being extended to seven hours on all weekdays from five hours now with effect from May 15. P.V.S. Six fall ill after tipple

Kakinada: Six tribals fell ill after consuming arrack brewed by themselves on the occasion of Gangalamma Jatara, the village deity festival, in Addateegala on Wednesday. All of them have been admitted to the Government hospital there. - Correspondent

100 taken ill

Khammam: A hundred persons fell ill in a cluster of villages in Nelakondapalli and Mudigonda mandals on Wednesday because of water contamination. The DMHO said all were out of danger. Most of them suffered from diarrhoea. - Staff Reporter

Two electrocuted

Srikakulam: Two persons, Komara Appa Rao (35), a seaman and his cousin, Lakshamana Rao (10) were electrocuted when they came in contact with a live electric wire near Jagannadhaputram in Santhabommali mandal on Tuesday. The two-wheeler they were riding was also burnt. - Special Correspondent

Ambedkar statue unveiled

CHITTOOR: The bronze statue of Ambedkar constructed at Darga Chowk, Chittoor was unveiled and garlanded by the municipal chairperson Sarala Mary along with C.K. Babu, honorary president State Municipal Employees association here on Wednesday. Chittoor MLA A.S. Manohar inaugurated the name boards of the statue. ANANTAPUR: The exercise for delimitation of Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituencies based on 2001 census was completed in the district on Tuesday. The exercise resulted in creation of 88 new MPTCs in addition to the existing 724 taking the total to 812. KAKINADA: A thirteen-hour non-stop singing of Thyagaraja kritis by music artistes has been planned from 8.00 a.m. to 9 p.m. on May 13 at Suryakala Mandir under the joint auspices of Saraswati Gana Sabha and Thyagaraja Seva Samithi to mark the celebration of Thyagaraja birth anniversary.

Munuganti Sriramamurthy , secretary of Thyagaraja Seva Samiti said here on Wednesday that seven artistes on violin, eight on mridangam and five on ghatam would extend accompaniment to the singers. He said musicians of repute and also upcoming Carnatic vocalists would render only Saint Thyagaraja compositions. — Correspondent

70 houses gutted

VISAKHAPATNAM : Seventy houses were gutted in a fire in Tumarada village in Balijipeta mandal of Vizianagaram district on Wednesday. Initial estimates put the loss at Rs. 5 lakhs. There were no casualties. It was reported that the fire was first noticed from the locked house of one G. Latchaiah and quickly spread to other houses. Fire tenders from Bobbili and Salur rushed to the village and brought the fire under control. _Staff Reporter

Salaries for Nellimarla mill workers on May 12

VISAKHAPATNAM: Workers of Nellimarla Jute Mills in Vizianagaram district which is under lockout since Sunday midnight, will receive their salaries of April on May 12, the management announced on Wednesday. Representatives of the management and the jute mills trade union, IFTU, would participate in the talks to be conducted by the Additional Commissioner of Labour in Hyderabad on Thursday over the lockout issue. _Staff Reporter
