Vizag to hold South Zone kabaddi tourney

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Kabaddi Association will organise the 23rd South Zone championship for men and women in Visakhapatnam from June 29 to July 2 at the Swarna Bharati Indoor Stadium, according to AKA secretary V. Veeralaknaiah.

The State teams will be announced at the Eluru ASR Stadium on May 13 and a coaching camp will be organised at Bhimavaram for the selected players.

MCH tournaments

The Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad will organise tournaments for trainees undergoing coaching at various MCH centres from May 16.

According to MCH sports director S.R. Prem Raj, competitions will be held in roller-skating, boxing, carrom, chess, tennikoit, chess, table tennis, basketball, gymnastics, hockey, kabaddi, sepak tekraw, cricket and volleyball.

Carrom official dead

Well-known international carrom and kabaddi umpire M. Laxman — popularly known as Vasu in the sporting circles — passed away on Wednesday night.

He was 54. Laxman officiated in many National-level kabaddi tournaments and also the third World carrom championship in Delhi recently besides about 10 State-level tournaments.

Hyderabad Carrom Association president B.K. Haranath and secretary S. Madanraj recalled the contribution of Laxman and expressed condolences to the bereaved family members.

APWCA meeting

The AP Women's Cricket Association has convened a special meeting on Friday at the request of tourism minister and APWCA president Dr. J. Geetha Reddy at Olympic Bhavan to celebrate the completion of the first year in office by incumbent office-bearers, according to APWCA secretary M. Ramalinga Reddy.

SAAP chairman M.S. Raj Thakur and APOA secretary L. Venkatram Reddy will be the guests of honour at the meeting.

Surprise visit

SAAP chairman M.S. Raj Thakur made a surprise visit to the venues of the summer coaching camps in gymnastics and table tennis at Lal Bahadur Stadium on Thursday. He enquired from the trainees whether they were being extended all the necessary facilities and also interacted with the coaches and requested them to work with full commitment for the success of the camps.

Submariners triumph

Submariners have won the Eastern Naval Command overall sports championship trophy. Fleet B was runner-up. Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of ENC Vice-Admiral Sureesh Mehta gave away the prizes at a function held in Visakhapatnam on Wednesday.
