India blanks Malaysia

NEW DELHI: The Indian girls defeated Malaysians 3-0 in the last league match in Group III in the ITF junior Fed Cup under-16 tennis tournament in Bangkok.

It was a welcome relief for India, after it had lost to the third-seeded China and the sixth-seeded Thailand in the league competition.

India was drawn to play Philippines in the first match of the positional competition.

Meanwhile, Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, Japan, China, Korea, Hong Kong and Uzbekistan made the quarterfinals.

The results:

India bt Malaysia 3-0 (Prerna Mythri bt Choo Lyn See 6-3, 6-3; Poojashree Venkatesh bt Neesha Thirumalaichelvam 6-3, 6-3; Prerna Mythri and Sweta Solanki bt Jawariah Binti Noordin and Neesha Thirumalaichelvam 6-0, 6-3).
