APCC plenary

HYDERABAD : Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee is webcasting its Sunday's plenary live from 9 a.m. The plenary, to mark the completion of two years of Congress rule, is being termed a `Rededication Day.'

Speaking to The Hindu , APCC president K. Keshava Rao said the morning session would begin with a ceremonial reception to the APCC chief. After flag-hoisting, Dr. Keshava Rao would make the presidential remarks.

The plenary can be seen on the web on www.apcongress.org and www.teluguone.com, according to B. Rammurthi, in-charge of the Andhra Pradesh Congress IT Cell. -Special Correspondent

Diploma in family

medicine exam

HYDERABAD : The College of General Practitioners, run by the State unit of Indian Medical Association, will hold diploma in family medicine examination in collaboration with the Colombo University's PGIM in September.

According to an IMA press release, MBBS doctors with five years experience in private/public service and IMA life members are eligible to apply for it. Classes will commence on June 4. May 30 is the last date for submission of applications. Nod for teacher

HYDERABAD : Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy has given clearance to transfer of teachers, according to the Andhra Pradesh Progressive Recognised Teachers' Union.

In a statement issued here on Saturday, union leaders -- B. Mohan Reddy and P.L. Narasimha Reddy -- demanded release of the schedule of transfers and promotions so as to complete the process before the schools re-open after summer vacation. - Special Correspondent

Kakinada : A farm worker, Gandham Satyanarayana, 35, was electrocuted when he came in contact with live wire at Samanasa village near Amalapuram on Saturday. - Correspondent

Two youths drowned

NIZAMABAD : Two youths - Suresh, 20, and Sai Kumar, 25, of Pocharam village in Yellareddy mandal were drowned in the Pocharam reservoir on Saturday.

According to information reaching here, the youths, who went to the reservoir for bath, slipped into it and were drowned.

Both of them used to stay in Hyderabad and had come to their village in connection with a function. - Staff Reporter

Demonstrations against

OBC quota deplored

HYDERABAD : The OBC Reservations `Sadhana' Samiti has called for State-wide demonstrations to protest against agitations opposing the proposed reservations in the Central educational institutions.

In a statement on Saturday, R. Krishnaiah, convener of the samiti, and president of the Andhra Pradesh Backward Classes Welfare Association, expressed displeasure over the demonstrations of Delhi Medical College students. - Special Correspondent

Mercury up

HYDERABAD : Mercury soared above 40 degree Celsius at many places in the State on Saturday.

Sultry weather prevailed in the coastal districts while it was dry and sunny in Telangana and Rayalseema.

Medak and Nandyal were the hotspots on Saturday by recording the State's highest day temperature of 44 degree Celsius.

However, there was isolated rain in Rayalaseema. There will be showers on Sunday also, according to a forecast issued by the State Met Office. - Special Correspondent

official language panel

Rajahmundry: Sannidhanam Narasimha Sarma was appointed as member of Official Language Committee for East Godavari district unit. In a special G.O. district Collector Pravin Prakash has said that Mr. Sarma will participate in O.L.C meetings and give his suggestions in improving Telugu language in the district -Staff Reporter.

`Kavacha darshanam'

Rajahmundry: On the eve of Narisimha Jayanthi, the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Nrisimha Swamy Kshetram performed Narisimha Swamy kavacha darshanam on Friday. Special abhishekams, pallaki seva, voonjal seva and other rituals were performed amidst chanting of hymns from dawn to dusk on Friday and Saturday. -Staff Reporter.

Free eye surgery camp

Kakinada: A free eye surgery camp will be organised at the Durga Prasad public school in Jagannaickpur on May 17 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. under the joint auspices of the Sri Kiran Institute of Ophthalmology, District association for prevention of blindness and the management of the Durga Prasad public school. Those selected for surgeries will be taken to the Sri Kiran institute where they will be provided free accommodation, food and medicines free of cost. For post operative care, free bus facility will be provided on the 3rd,10th and 40th day. -Correspondent

TIRUPATI: A free medical camp was conducted at the State Bank of India's Tilak Road branch here by Dr.B.Koteswara Rao of Tirupati Diabetic Centre.

Free diagnosis was conducted and medicines distributed to 70 persons including the bank's customers, employees and their family members.-Staff Reporter

MADANAPALLE: K.Prabhakara Reddy, MLA of Thamballapalle, inaugurated Gollapalle gram panchayat office in B. Kothakota mandal and the anganwadi building here recently. The MLA urged people to make use of Praja Patham scheme. MPDO Lakshmipathi, MRO Swarnalatha and others participated. - Correspondent

Traffic rally

CHITTOOR: An impressive rally comprising personnel of police transport department, Lions Club and other organisations conducted by the Police Department was held here on Saturday to bring awareness among people and drivers about traffic rules and regulations.

The rallies with placards and banners detailing traffic rules headed by Superintendent of Police V.V.Gopala Krishna, Additional SP Amarnath and Circle Inspectors Mallikarjan Fredric and Kesappa started from the Collector's bungalow and went round on the main roads. - Correspondent

3 resign from TDP

KURNOOL: In a day of significant political developments, TDP functionaries resigned from the party at three places in Kurnool district on Saturday. Rudranna, ZPTC member at Kautalam, mandal president Gonegandla Laxmi and MPTC member Kulumala Hanumanthu sent in their resignations to district president K.E.Krishna Murthy. -Staff Reporter

Body recovered

KURNOOL: The police recovered the body of a two-wheeler rider near Masamajid on the outskirts of the city on Saturday. According to reports, the motorbike rider, who is yet to be identified, fell down and died. The police found Rs. 8,000 on his body. - Staff Reporter
