Students, parents throng PU colleges in city

BANGALORE: With cut-offs as high as last year, students are heading for the best Pre-University colleges in the city. The cut-off for the Science stream is the highest, with most colleges having a cut-off of 96 per cent both for PCMB and PCME combinations.
In spite of the rapidly decreasing number of admissions to the Science stream, the cut-off is still kept very high because of the number of opportunities that come along with the stream.
Commerce is next in line with a cut-off of 80 per cent. Admissions to the Commerce stream are the highest, with almost every student wanting to get into the line. This line has apparently taken over as the next big field of study after science, with more and more students being interested in a career in economics and accounts.
The cut off for Arts is the lowest at 60 per cent. The Arts stream will also be having separate internal test for admissions to the various courses offered. Despite the admission in arts being more of a prestige issue, many students are willing to shed their inhibitions and are actually looking forward for a career in this field. "This is not because of the low cut-off but because of the genuine interest in the line," says Anisha a student who scored 75 per cent marks and who is now applying for arts in Jyothi Nivas College.
Dress code
But cut-offs is not the only criteria. Admissions to colleges also require a set of long rules regarding dress code, ban of mobile phones on campus and many such strict rules to be followed by the students. Christ College, for instance, lays special stress on the dress code aspect. And most other colleges stress equally on the way a student carries himself.
Fancy accessories, T-shirts with slogans and mobile phones are frowned upon.
Students and parents thronged the colleges across the city. Many had started early in the morning to book a place in the serpentine queues. With a record number of students clearing the SSLC examinations this year, the students had no choice but to apply in as many colleges as their parents' purses allowed.
Bishop Cotton Women's Christian College

Fee: (Approximate figures) Science Rs. 4,100, Commerce and Arts Rs. 3,600.
Last year's cut off: Science 96 per cent, Commerce 83 per cent, Arts 60 per cent.
Dress: No short or tight clothes.

Sri Bhagawan Mahaveer Jain PU College

Last year's cut off: PCMB 93 per cent, PCME 92 per cent, PCMC 91 per cent, Commerce 78 per cent, Arts 71 per cent.
Dress code: No revealing or provocative clothes.
Additional rules: Industry interface and projects are compulsory as are the courses in personality development and yoga.
