Back Power crisis

This refers to "New Delhi, Mumbai face blackouts as summer sets in," (Business Line, May 9): Here are some simple facts and suggestions: First, some commercial enterprises are not willing to adhere to the government directive of operating only during sun light hours as it affects their business. These undertakings can be allowed to operate on weekly holidays to compensate for the loss in business. Else, the business community should be charged a steeper tariff rate to operate during peak hours.

Second, consumption of power in public areas should be restricted. Third, the level of theft in Delhi and Maharashtra is amongst the highest in the country. Following the pattern in volumes of power theft, power cuts should be extended to these areas on a priority basis before it is extended to other parts of city. Finally, pricing of electricity should be steep, especially during periods of high demand and low supply, in major cities.
