Shipping Corporation of India's stature as a global liner service operator has received a shot in the arm. The state-owned shipping line was selected to head the IPBC Conference.

At the meeting of the India-Pakistan-Bangladesh-Ceylon (IPBC) Conference, held recently, Mr S.S. Rangnekar, Director, SCI, was elected as Chairman of, IPBC. Mr Rangnekar heads the liner division of SCI.

IPBC is an association of 18 global shipping lines that carry nearly 75 per cent of the cargo in the India-UK-Europe sector. The conference is powerful as it decides on the freight rates and services to the sector, though there is competition among member lines.

The member lines of IPBC offerfive direct sailing a week between the main port on the west coast of India and Europe.

This is the third time an SCI official was selected to head IPBC. Earlier in 1999 Mr P.K. Srivastava, and in 1987 Mr LMS Rajwar, (both chairman of SCI) held the IPBC top post.
