Tributes paid to Sundaraiah

KADAPA: CPI (M) leaders here paid rich tributes to Putchalapalli Sundaraiah on his 21th death anniversary on Friday.

CPI(M) district secretary B. Narayana garlanded a portrait of Sundaraiah and called upon the party workers to strive to achieve goals envisaged by the great leader. He was a model Communist leader who had come under the influence of Mahatma Gandhi during his Intermediate days. As a result, he gave up studies and took part in freedom struggle, he said.

DCCB staff seek wage revision

KADAPA: Kadapa District Cooperative Central Bank employees staged relay hunger strike for the third day on Friday, demanding wage revision pending since a decade.

DCCB employees G. Balasubbaiah, K. Kosal Ram, P. Chandrasekhar, K. Anjaneyulu, T. Ramasubbaiah, B.V. Ramana, T. Venkatasubbaiah and S. Subrahmanyam took part in the fast. Employees association district secretary Y. Pratap Reddy sought grant of promotions and regularisation of temporary staff assistants. The employees would go on mass CL on May 23, he said. - Staff Reporter

Sacked guards launch fast

KADAPA: Four security guards of Sri Veeranjaneya Swamy temple at Gandi, who were recently sacked, launched an indefinite hunger strike before the temple on Friday demanding their reinstatement.

The guards — Venkatesh, Venkataramana, Uthanna and Sivaprasad — had been working since seven years and were not paid salaries for the last eight months, according to Inter-Caste Couples Association district president Y. Pagidalaiah. Alleging that their services were terminated on political grounds that they were appointed during TDP rule, he sought their continuation. - Staff Reporter

AISF activists gherao officials

KURNOOL: Activists of the All-India Students Federation (AISF) gheraoed top officials of the Higher Education Department here on Friday seeking elevation of the Postgraduate Centre at Kurnool to an autonomous institution. They also sought action against those responsible for the alleged irregularities in the Physical Education Common Entrance test in 2002. - Staff Reporter

Comedian, two others to get NTR Award

HYDERABAD : Comedy artiste Padmanabham, stage actor Chatla Sriramulu and singer of yesteryear Ravubalasaraswati will be presented NTR Award on May 28 to mark the 84th birth anniversary of the former Chief Minister.

N. Lakshmi Parvathi, president of NTR TDP and chairperson, NTR Educational Society, announced here on Friday that the award carries Rs. 25,000 in cash and a memento. A play, Kabirdas, written by D. Vijayabhaskar would be staged at the award presentation function. - Special Correspondent

AIR commentary on ODIs

HYDERABAD: All India Radio, Hyderabad, will broadcast live commentary alternately in Hindi and English on Hyderabad `B' channel (medium wave 217.8 meters, 1377 MHz), on four one-day international cricket matches between India and West Indies.

The broadcast timings are: 7.30 p.m. to 3.50 a.m. on May 20, 6.50 p.m. to 2.50 a.m. on May 23, 26 and May 29. - Special Correspondent

Cooperative bank staff agitation from today

HYDERABAD : The Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Bank Employees' Association is launching an agitation on May 20 demanding wage revision and withdrawal of the amendment 116 C (1) to APCS Act.

Members will stage dharnas and resort to mass casual leave and even strike, affecting the functioning of cooperative central banks in the State.

In a press release issued here on Friday, the association wanted the Government to strengthen the cooperative sector for rescuing farmers from the clutches of moneylenders. - Special Correspondent

Dies of diarrhoea

VIZIANAGARAM : V. Kanakayya, 40, of Mamidipalli village in Salur mandal died of diarrhoea on Thursday night. He reportedly took part in a feast on the occasion of the village goddess festival. Mandal Revenue Officer Vijaya Kumar visited the village and inspected sanitary conditions. -Correspondent

MLA denies charge

Kakinada : Dommeti Venkateswarlu, MLA of Thallarevu, denied the charge that of the 120 mass marriages he performed on Thursday in the presence of two Ministers at Gollapalem, a few of them were child marriages.

At a press conference here on Friday, he made it clear that some of them were not minors. He said the marriages were performed only after ascertaining from their parents in writing about their age. Mr. Venkateswarlu said he was prepared to face any enquiry on the issue. -Correspondent

BIE extends date for affiliation

HYDERABAD : The last date for submitting applications (form II) for provisional affiliation to private, aided and unaided institutions by the Intermediate Board has been further extended up to June 30 with a late submission fee of Rs.1,000.

Medak records highest temperature

HYDERABAD : Medak town recorded the State's highest temperature for the fourth consecutive day on Friday at 45 degree Celsius. At the same time, it received a rainfall of 4 cm.

During the 24-hour period ending Friday morning, there was rain at many places in Rayalaseema and at a few places in Telangana while weather was dry in coastal Andhra.

Under the influence upper air circulation, isolated rain will continue in all the three regions of the State on Saturday. - Special Correspondent

Three armymen hurt in accident

ADILABAD: Three armymen from Hyderabad were injured when their vehicle met with an accident near Neredigonda village on NH-7. There were about 40 vehicles belonging to the Defence institutions, which were reportedly moving to Punjab from Hyderabad when one of the vehicles met with an accident. The injured have been identified as Ashok Kumar Nidhi, Ghan Prakash and M.K. Yadav. They were shifted to Hyderabad after initial treatment at the Government hospital here. - Staff Reporter

SBH cashier felicitated

KARIMNAGAR: Officers and employees of State Bank of Hyderabad in the district felicitated I. Ram Reddy, head cashier SBH, Karimnagar main branch, on the occasion of his appointment as workmen director on the board of SBH by the Union Government.
