Dilshad, Athira are champions

PALAKKAD: Kozhikode's Mohammed Dilshad and C.P. Athira won the title in the boys' and girls' section respectively, in the Kerala State sub-junior (under-15) chess championship, which concluded at the Olavakode Railway Institute here on Sunday.

Dilshad, a ninth standard student of NSS School (Meenchanda), finished level with Thrissur's Vishnu R. Menon at the end of the eight-round event but won on better progressive score.

It was a tough fight in the girls' category, with Athira, a ninth standard student of Providence School, and Thiruvananthapuram's Anjana S. Krishnan ending the five-round event with 4.5 points each.

The final placings:

Boys: 1. Mohammed Dilshad (Koz, 6.5 pts), 2. Vishnu R. Menon (Tsr, 6.5), 3. Jethin Saji Issac (Ekm, 6), 4. S.R. Harikrishna (Tvm, 6), 5. K.V. Vignesh (Ekm, 6).

Girls: 1. C.P. Athira (Koz, 4.5), 2. Anjana S. Krishnan (Tvm, 4.5), 3. A. Niji (Koz, 4), 4. Aarcha Gowri Varma (Ekm, 4), 5. Aparna (Knr, 3). — Principal Correspondent
