10 killed, 30 hurt in road accident

KUNNAMKULAM (Thrissur district) : Ten persons of a marriage party, including a woman, were killed when the tempo in which they were travelling collided with a private line bus at Kanippayyur, near here, on Sunday afternoon.

The police identified them as Madapattuparambil Jamal, 30, of Pazhunnana; Pulikottil Kochumathew, 62, of Pazhunnana Thermadham Veettil; Johnson, 33, of Chemmunthatta; Pulikott Kurien, 82, of Pazhunnana; James Thaikkodan, 35, of Erumappetty; Muttikkal Chinnan, (known as Ignatius), 52, of Pazhnnana; Muttikkal Daniel, 23, of Edakkalathur Veettil; Cheru, 53, of Ponnore, Kidangan; Antony, 60 of Puthussery and his wife Mary, 55. Nine of them died on the spot, while Muttikkal Daniel succumbed to his injuries at Amala Hospital. Jamal was the driver of the tempo traveller.

Nearly 30 persons, including some bus passengers, were injured in the accident.

They have been admitted to Amala Hospital, Unity Hospital and Royal Hospital.

The condition of four of the injured is reported to be critical.

Compensation

Education and Cultural Affairs Minister M.A. Baby who visited the spot announced that the Government would pay relief of Rs.1 lakh each to the relatives of those who had been killed in the accident. The seriously injured persons wiould be given Rs.25,000 each. Apart from this, the Government would bear the treatment expenditure of the victims.
