Back REC to fund 500-MW thermal project Our Bureau
Hyderabad , May 31 The Rural Electrification Corporation (REC) will fund the Rs 2,077 crore, 500-MW AP Genco thermal project coming up at Chelpur village, Ghanpur mandal in Warangal district. Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) has been awarded the contract for supply and erection of boiler for the project. The Bhoopalapalli thermal power station, to be completed in 36 months, is being considered as a boon to the drought-prone Telangana region and is expected to generate 3,500 million units per year. The Chief Minister, Dr Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, will lay the foundation stone for the power plant on June 1. About 375 hectares of land have been acquired for the project close to the Kakatiya Coal Fields of Singareni Collieries Company Ltd in the Bhoopalapalli mine block. The fly-ash generated from this will be used in making bricks and cement.
CAPACITY ADDITION
The State Government has drawn up plans to add 6,153-MW generation capacity by the end of the XI Plan (2012), according to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office. The new power plants to be constructed include 2x210 MW RTPP Stage-II, 6x39 MW Priyadarshini Jurala Hydro electric project, 1x500 MW VTPS State-IV, 1x500MW TPS at Chelpur, 1x500 MW Kothagudem Stage-VI, 2100 MW Gas-based combined cycle power project near Karimnagar, 2x800 MW Krishnapatnam Thermal Power project, 2x25 MW Nagarjuna Sagar Tail Pond project, 1x9 MW Pochampad HES Unit-IV and 6x40 MW Lower Jurala Hydro-electric project.
