BANGALORE: Fifty-eight candidates have filed their nomination papers for the biennial elections to six seats in the Legislative Council from graduates' and teachers' constituencies. Wednesday was the last day for filing nomination papers. The elections will be held on June 17. Karnataka North-east, Karnataka South-west and Bangalore are the graduates' constituencies. The teachers' constituencies are Karnataka South-east, Karnataka South-west and Karnataka South. The candidates filed their papers at the offices of deputy commissioners. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on Thursday. Saturday is the last date for withdrawal of nominations. Prominent among the candidates are Minister for Higher Education D.H. Shankaramurthy (Karnataka South-west graduates' constituency) and Minister for Science and Technology Ramachandra Gowda (Bangalore graduates' constituency), both BJP leaders. Two members each representing graduates and teachers in the Council will retire on June 21. They are Mr. Shankaramurthy, Mr. Ramachandra Gowda (graduates), Balakrishna Bhat and Marithibbe Gowda (teachers). Two seats are vacant following the deaths of M.R. Tanga (BJP, Karnataka North-east graduates) and S. Channabasavaiah (Karnataka South-east teachers).
