BANGALORE: The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) on Wednesday started a drive to remove all illegal hoardings in the city. Mayor Mumtaz Begum launched the drive in Koramangala.

The drive, which will be carried out throughout the city, is based on the decision taken by the BMP Council sub-committee set up to study the pros and cons of banning hoardings in the city. The Mayor, accompanied by Deputy Mayor M. Lakshminarayana and other members of the committee, inspected several areas in and around Koramangala on Wednesday. She asked the officials to pull down all illegal hoardings. After all the hoardings were removed, the BMP would call tenders to allot rights for outdoor advertising, she said.

The Mayor, who noticed that some hoardings continued to dot Hosur Road in Adugodi even after the lapse of their licence period, asked the officials to pull them down immediately.

Objecting to a huge hoarding in front of the Forum Mall in Koramangala, the Mayor asked the officials whether the existing advertising bylaws had any provisions to take action against such advertisements.

Pointing out that the BMP would soon come out with fresh advertising bylaws, the Mayor said the draft bylaws would be available for the people to study and suggest modifications.
