Candidate's house set on fire

Kakinada: In a case of alleged arson, the thatched house of Panduboyina Bhaskar Rao in Munganda, a candidate for MPTC seat of P. Gannavaram Mandal, was destroyed on Thursday. Rao resigned from the Congress and filed his nomination as TDP candidate. - Correspondent

Maoists warn party candidates

VISAKHAPATNAM: The CPI (Maoist) has served a warning on leaders of political parties readying themselves to file nominations to the Zilla Parishad elections not to contest in the elections. According to reports reaching here, some naxalites had served the warning in some villages in Pedavalasa in G.K. Veedhi mandal on Monday, a day before the nomination process commenced. - Special Correspondent

`Drop move to form tribal battalion'

HYDERABAD: The Andhra Pradesh Girijana Samakhya has urged the State Government to drop the move to form a tribal battalion saying that it will lead to friction between naxalites and tribals. Addressing a press conference here on Thursday, samakhya leaders — Shankar Nayak and Ramavat Anjay Nayak — said the Government must distribute forest lands to tribals. - Special Correspondent

NIMS entrance exam on June 18

HYDERABAD: The entrance examination for admission to the super-speciality courses (DM/MCh) of NIMS will be held at the Osmania Medical College here on June 18. Application status of the candidates can be viewed on www.nimsexams.com. Hall tickets have been dispatched to eligible candidates and `due letter' to those who need to submit them for the necessary certificates. Candidates can obtain hall tickets on submitting the due certificates from Sub-Dean's Office, NIMS, Punjagutta, Hyderabad, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. on or before June 17. - Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: R. Radhakishen, retired Chief Engineer of Transco, has been appointed member of the Andhra Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission. A.K. Cloth merchant robbed of Rs. 5 lakhs

NIZAMABAD: A cloth merchant Janak Kotak of Secunderabad was attacked and robbed of Rs.5 lakhs at the Khaleelwadi grounds here by unidentified persons on Thursday. One Town SI Mohd. Waheeduddin said Mr. Kotak was admitted to the Government Hospital with a head injury.

Two Maharashtra workers die in accident

NIZAMABAD: Two persons were killed and another one was seriously injured when a Hyderabad-bound truck from Nagpur hit them at Nadipally tanda under Dichpally police station limits on NH-7 on Thursday. According to G. Srinivas, SI, Lakshman and Suresh, aged between 22 and 25 years, died on the spot while Kailash Jadav was struggling for life at the District Headquarters Hospital. The victims belonging to Maharashtra were working as coolies.

Flyover proposed to ease traffic congestion

KURNOOL: The Traffic Advisory Committee proposed a flyover at the General Hospital in the city to ease traffic congestion at the main centre.

The panel headed by SP B. Malla Reddy reviewed the junctions where the traffic problem was serious. Also, the panel proposed to set up auto stands at Bangarupet and C. Camp centres to reduce congestion. Additional Commissioner of Municipality Anand Reddy and others were present. — Staff Reporter

23 ZPTC nominations filed

KURNOOL: Zilla Parishad office witnessed hectic activity on Thursday as 23 nominations were filed for ZPTC seats in the district.

With the filing of the 23 nominations, the total number of nominations reached 31 in the district so far. Many nominations are expected to be filed on Friday and Saturday. — Staff Reporter

KURNOOL: Collector M. Dana Kishore reviewed the progress of school buildings and drinking water works in anganwadi centers under the Indiramma programme in Kurnool district. Man ends life after killing wife

KHAMMAM: A man committed suicide after killing his wife in Manuguru on Wednesday night. According to reports, Y. Ramulu, 35, a tractor driver, clubbed his wife, Chittamma, 30, to death when she was asleep, around midnight. Later he locked himself up in a room and

committed suicide by hanging himself from the roof. The tractor driver's mother tried to go to the rescue of the couple but in vain. Manuguru police are investigating.

ISO certificate for police wing

VIZIANAGARAM: The Vizianagaram police communications division has received the Bureau of Indian Standards Certificate (ISO 9001-2000) for implementing modern communication network and utilising the same for policing, according to Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh Mann in a press release on Thursday.-Correspondent

Election cell set up at SP's office

VIZIANAGARAM: Superintendent of Police Vikram Singh Mann opened a special election monitoring cell in his camp office on Thursday. The cell with phone numbers 236218 and mobile No. 9440795915 will be manned by a six-member team. The SP said that so far 155 polling stations were identified as hypersensitive, 338 sensitive, 36 inaccessible and 62 extremist prone in the district. Additional forces would be mobilised to these centres after monitoring the situation, he said in a press release.-Correspondent

Workers stage dharna

Kakinada: Workers owing allegiance to the East Godavari district gas delivery workers union have staged dharna in front of the Collectorate here on Thursday protesting against the removal of 12 workers of Sri Anjani Gas Agency, Ravulapalem. The demonstrators raised slogans denouncing the management's unilateral action and demanded immediate reinstatement of the workers. J Venkateswerlu, Secretary of the Union, alleged that the management had acted vindictively against the workers for forming a union. Later they called on the Collector in a delegation led by K. Joji district IFTU president and requested him to intervene as the HPCL is a public sector undertaking. -Correspondent

VIZIANAGARAM: Zilla Parishad chairperson Botsa Jhansi Lakshmi (Congress) filed nomination for the post of ZPTC from Gurla mandal on Thursday. The others who filed nominations are: TDP district vice-president Yadla Ramana Murty for ZPTC from Vizianagaram, former MLA from Naguru Nimmaka Jayaraj (TDP) for ZPTC from Jiyyammavalasa the BJP district president P. New train for Tirupati

MACHILIPATNAM: A new train service between Machilipatnam and Tirupati has been sanctioned by the authorities and it will be run thrice a week. It will be introduced very soon, according to Badiga Ramakrishna, Mchilipatnam MP.

The MP had worked to secure the train and used his good offices for the purpose. - Correspondent
