Law varsity rank list on June 19

CHENNAI: The Tamil Nadu Dr. Ambedkar Law University will release the rank list of the B.A.B.L. (Hons) degree course entrance examination on June 19. According to an official release, the list would be available at the university as well as on its website http://www.tndalu.org.

The release also said the common entrance test for five-year and three-year law degree courses for the next academic year would be held on June 17 and 18 respectively. While 4,026 candidates are writing the five-year examination, 7,147 are appearing for the three-year course entrance test. — Special Correspondent

Karunanidhi taking "rest"

BANGALORE: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi who is on a personal visit to Bangalore, spent the whole of Friday at his daughter's house in J.P. Nagar.

An official who is accompanying Mr. Karunanidhi told The Hindu that the Chief Minister was "under complete rest" and did not participate in any programme or meet visitors. Some local DMK leaders and supporters who tried to meet Mr. Karunanidhi were denied an audience.

The official said Mr. Karunanidhi would leave for Chennai on Monday morning. — Staff Reporter

Southern Railway to run special trains

CHENNAI: Southern Railway will operate following special trains to clear extra rush of passengers.

Train no 0669 Chennai Central-Bilaspur special will leave Central at 9.10 p.m. on June 18

and reach Bilaspur at 8.30 p.m. the next day. The train will stop at Gudur, Vijayawada, Balharshah and Gondia.

The composition will be one first class, five sleeper class, five general second class and two luggage-cum-brake van coaches.

Train no. 0667 Chennai Central-Howrah Special will leave Central at 10.30 a.m. on June 19

and reach Howrah at 4.45 p.m. the next day. It will stop at Gudur, Nellore, Ongole, Vijayawada, Eluru, Rajamundry, Visakapatnam, Palasa, Berhampur, Khurda Road, Bhubaneshwar, Bhadrak, Balasore and Kharagpur.

The composition will be eight sleeper class, three general second class and two luggage-cum--brake van coaches.

Advance reservation for the above trains will commence on June 17, according to a railway press release. — Special Correspondent

Refresher course in Chemistry

CHENNAI: The UGC-Academic Staff College, University of Madras, is conducting a refresher course in Chemistry on an all India basis for the benefit of lecturers working in universities and colleges from July 4 to 24.

College lecturers working in universities and affiliated colleges including self-finance colleges who are working on permanent/temporary basis with a minimum of one year service are invited to apply for the refresher course. One killed in road accident

Nagercoil: One person was killed on the spot and his relative sustained injuries in a road accident on Friday.

According to police, Rajesh (26), who was working in the Army, was going towards Palappallam with his friend Jeni Thomas (24) from Nagercoil when a State Transport Corporation bus from the opposite direction dashed against their vehicle. Rajesh was killed on the spot and Jeni Thomas was injured critically. He was later admitted to Government Hospital.

Fatally knocked down

Nagercoil: An aged man was killed in a road accident on Friday.

According to police, Kunju Nadar (70) of Thiruthuvapuram near Kalliakkavilai was trying to cross national highway at Kallikkavilai, when a tempo from the opposite direction hit him by killing him on the spot.

Demonstration

Nagercoil: Activists of Indian Victory Party staged a demonstration in front of the Collectorate here on Friday urging the Government to withdraw the increase in the prices of petroleum products.

The State organiser of the party Jeyasingh led the agitation.

Woman commits suicide

PERAMBALUR: A 21-year-old woman, R. Dhanalakshmi of Mangalam village near here allegedly committed suicide by taking poison.

Police suspected family dispute as the cause of the incident. She was rushed to the Government Headquarters Hospital, where she died on Friday.

The Mangalamedu police have registered a case and are investigating.

Awareness rally

PERAMBALUR: An awareness rally on the outbreak of chikungunya will be taken out in Perambalur shortly. A decision to this effect was taken at an official meeting convened by the Collector, Anil Meshram, here on Friday.

It was also decided to conduct awareness programmes throughout the district.

Sand lorries seized

KARUR: Six lorries transporting sand illegally were seized by revenue officials. A penalty of Rs. 1.65 lakh has been levied on the offenders.

The Karur RDO, N. Vidhya Shankar, the Tashildars Narayanan and Subramanian, and other Revenue officials intercepted lorries at Vellaripatti, Sanapiratti, Rajapuram and Nallakumaranpatti near Karur on Thursday night. The lorries were transporting sand without valid papers. It is said that the sand had also been quarried illegally.The lorries were brought to the RDO's office.The drive would continue, said Mr. Vidhya Shankar.

Ward member lynched

KARUR: In a ghastly incident, a few residents of Ponnangoundanur in Karur district lynched their own ward member of the Palaviduthi panchayat to death on Thursday night.

Sources said that the deceased, S. Thangaraj (40) was supervising the installation of a public tap when a resident K. Velaiyan (50) objected to the tap being installed in front of his house stating that the tap would be a nuisance to him. When the ward member waived his objections aside and sought to proceed with work, Velaiyan, his son Gunasekaran (24), their relatives S. Mariappan and K. Selvam as also Velaiyan's wife Mariyayee, all allegedly lynched Thangaraj to death.

While Velaiyan and Gunasekaran have been arrested, the police are on the look out for the other accused persons.

Mettur level

Tiruchi: The water level at the Mettur dam stood at 112.70 feet on Friday. The inflow was 638 cusecs and the outflow 15,000 cusecs. — Staff Reporter

Transfer counselling for teachers

ERODE: The Secondary Grade and Post-Graduate teachers' transfer counselling would be conducted on June 24 and 25 in Erode district. In a press release, the Chief Educational Officer, P. Kuppusamy, stated that the Director of School Education had announced the guidelines to be followed in the general transfer of teachers.

Accordingly, those who seek local and district-level transfers may apply to the Chief Educational Officer, Erode, on or before June 22 and the applications would be considered at the counselling meeting. - Staff Reporter

New course

ERODE: Kongu Engineering College, Perundurai, will introduce B.Tech in Food Technology in the ensuing academic year.

A release from the college says Food Technology, which integrates Chemistry, Engineering, Biology and Nutrition, will produce graduates to meet the needs of the food processing industry.

Quoting a report, it says there are three lakh jobs available annually in the country in meat processing, fish and poultry processing, food and beverage and dairy industries. It claims that it is the first self-financing college in the State to start such a course.
