The accident occurred when the labourers were engaged in digging the ground to lay the foundation for construction of a building on a vacant site adjacent to Beach Castle apartments, opposite Sri Kanaka Durga Nursing Home on Saturday evening. The vacant site is about 30 feet below the apartment complex ground level. The site is also located in a sandy area and a downpour during the previous night aggravated the problem. Six labourers were digging the foundation when the compound wall caved in. While four managed to escape, two were trapped under the debris. The dead were identified as: Naga Raju (26) of Srikakulam, and Malla Lakshmi (45) of Allipuram area in the city. A room constructed along the compound wall for the watchman also collapsed but luckily no one was present in the room. Officials of GVMC pressed excavators into service to retrieve the bodies from under the debris. The Two Town CI Varadaraju rushed to the accident site along with his men and supervised the relief operations. The bodies were sent to the King George Hospital for post-mortem.
