Maoist killed

HYDERABAD: A Maoist was killed in an exchange of fire with the police on Thursday in Bacharam reserve forest near Maredumanujinne in Peddakothhapally mandal of Mahabubnagar district. The police recovered a country-made pistol, grenade, two empty cartridges and party literature from the scene of the encounter. - Special Correspondent

New train flagged off

NIZAMABAD: The SCR introduced train no. 1321 from Nizamabad to Pune via Mudked on Thursdat. Senior most class IV employee in the SCR U. Narsinga Rao flagged off the train at the station here. The train will depart from Pune at 10.30 a.m. and reach Nizamabad following day at 10.30 a.m. The extended train will be useful to passengers travelling between Nizamabad and Pune, according to the authorities. - Staff Reporter

CPI's charge denied

HYDERABAD: The CPI(M) on Thursday described as "baseless" CPI leaders' charge that Marxists had acted contrarily to the discussions held between the two parties on staking claim to Khammam and Nalgonda Zilla Parishads. State committee secretary B.V. Raghavulu said that no talks were held between leaders of both parties on the issue. There was also no truth in the allegation that the CPI(M) had agreed to seek Mayorship of Vijayawada Municipal Corporation by rotation, he noted. - Special Correspondent

Jail for excise officials

ADILABAD: Seven Excise Department officials and five APSP personnel were sentenced to 10 years imprisonment and fined Rs. 5,000 each by S. Madhav Rao, Third Additional Sessions Judge (Fast Track court), Asifabad, in a case related to the custodial death of an accused person Macha Narasaiah, on October 18, 1997. Narasaiah's wife who visited him in the excise police station in Mancherial on October 12 accused officials of beating him up in custody. The prosecution conducted by Prakash Chand Jain examined 22 witnesses. - Staff Reporter

Student ends life

Kakinada: A student of second year degree course Ringolu Lakshmi Narasimha Murthy (21) of A. Vemavaram village in Amalapuram rural mandal committed suicide by consuming a pesticide at his home owing to domestic problems on Thursday. - Correspondent

MRPS plea to Congress

HYDERABAD: The Madiga Reservation Porata Samiti (MRPS) has urged the Congress to nominate Madigas to three of the four Zilla Parishads reserved for the Scheduled Castes since Madigas were in majority among SCs. In a statement here on Thursday, MRPS State president P. Krupakar Madiga wanted the Congress to nominate Madigas to the chairperson posts of Medak, Guntur and Kurnool and render political justice to them. - Special Correspondent

KADAPA: Tool kits required to test adulteration of food products were distributed among consumer clubs in the district on Thursday. KADAPA: CITU district president D. Shyam and general secretary A. Raghunatha Reddy on Thursday released pamphlets on the proposed picketing of Collectorate on July 13 and office of Transco CMD at Tirupati on July 20.
